OP, the only stupid question is the one you ask after you have damaged a piece of equipment and then have to find out how to not frick it up the next time......

I second the advice given on the Kenwood deck. My wife has the X593, which is only different in cosmetics to the 493. The 593's USB input is not on the front, but rather out the back via a USB cable. That cord is routed into her glovebox, where she keeps her 8GB USB thumbdrive connected...
The **** control can be a little tricky at first. Make use of the remote, as it makes things a lot easier.

Excelon also has a 2 year warranty...

hey freeman, i didnt start out with the after market speakers and subs all at once either. trust though, with robs help it was definitly easier along with everyone elses help here. i started with just the lower end of the music spectrum first, then i added speakers. honestly, ive gone through like 4 different systems and combinations of equipment, but im still a noob. i felt the same way about spending my money, but it is true, you get what you pay for, but being here, you can get your hands on things that surpass its price tag with quality. dont be nervous about spending just a little more either, youre always planning on adding to the overall value of your system later on anyways :P i know im no where done!
