What are you doing to influence the market

BTW, it freaks me out seeing some body shops doing custom installs
Heads up guys, guess what day it is.

Full moon, the idiots are out in force.
The mixture works great in the Nanaimo market but here in Courtenay it is the exact opposite. If anything this town is way more redneck, the off road scene is much bigger than the import scene. We do alright with the offroad and performance side of things and have audio to boot. Yes it stretches things a little bit but 99% of the time the performance or off road gear has to be ordered in. At least I am my own competition now and not losing it to say Lordco or similar stores. It is a growing business and I intend to grow along with it and create a unique market that will continue to set me apart from the others, just like PAS.

I am more comfortable with installers putting in performance parts than most "mechanics". If I ever get my own shop started I for sure will do performance items as well. But it will definately be the more protected lines like Greddy, Apexi, Tein if I had a say.

The issue is not stretching themselves too thin, it's back to doing half-assed work and charging full price for it.
It would stun you to see how much crap I come across everyday. (Though it stuns me more to see how much makes it into the magazine, but that's another story.) I wish I was in a position to publish the 'what not to do' pictures that I get to see along with the names of the people that have done the work.
Don't get me wrong, we all have to learn and we all make mistakes, but some of this stuff is just rude.
Again: do something, do anything, and do it well.

i try to influence my market by trying to keep on top of the newest products and trying to exploit it to my advantage. as and independent we can react, it seems, quicker to industry trends and new products as our hands arent tied like they can be in big stores, i know on many occasions donny and sean at the fs here in kelowna have voiced frustrations in not being able to get some products, i seem to remember them being upset about a pioneer video piece that they coulnt, or better put, were told they wouldnt get. as a small store its a little easier for us , at least in my case, i have alot of freedom and flexibility as im the boss and make the rules and there arent any, the big guys have some advantages over me and i have advantages over them, thats fun, im really lucky that i get along very well with almost all the key guys in the other stores in town, professional coutesy if you will, oh and i sell my exclusive products for decent money and dont take it in the a$$ for anyone, discount it once, you will no doubt have to discount it again, its responsible retailing, something has to cover for 15-20 point headunit sales, doesnt it, and for me its concept car audio, avi speakers, and phoenix gold/ryval, senseless rant over, goodbye
I'm trying to influence the market by purchasing a new term lab rig and re-commiting myself to DB Dragracing this year.
When I first worked at a shop in the 80's, guys in the industry would tell us that "it's so much harder than the 70's", when I came back into the industry in the mid-90's people said "it's so much harder than the 80's" --
There will always be challenges in ANY industry (trust me I used to work in a Downtown Hotel) and to tell you the truth the reality is that every year more people are after the same shrinking market dollars.
The one unfortuate trend I have noticed is that alot of sales people I meet are not "car audio guys" -- instead they are guys who read Vibe, and other "Lifestylezines" and have no clue about Car Audio and what it is all about. It seems less and less "salesmen" are inclined to becoming professionals in their chosen trade (I wish I could meet more "Daves")
-- doh, Dave the senseless rant thing is contageous --
The only way to survive is to constantly improve your skills and knowledge and to always remember that you have one thing to offer clients that no one else has.... YOU.

Dave's an idiot.. oh wait a minute...
I guess you have to get your start in the business somehow, but this is a complicated one, not like home audio. You can't sell someone a pair of speakers and know they'll be getting 75% of that products capabilitie so long as they wire the polarity on both correctly. These darn things need to be installed, the doors need to be sealed, blah, blah...
I was at a local shop the other day and was talking to their high-school co-op student. Seemed like an intelligent lad. I wanted to show him something I was reviewing (because I thought it was neat) and asked him on the way to the car if he took Physics in school. He hadn't.
If ever there was a pre-requisite to get started in this industry, and succeed based on knowledge, not just flair or a suave approach, it would easily have to be a good comprehension of grade nine physics.
