I just got two of these.
HUGE improvement from the older models (you are talking about the new one right?)
From my experience, and everyone elses, they work best in a ported box.
Mine is 3.5cu feet net, tuned to 40hz.
They are very very loud while maintaining great sq.
A very good all around woofer for the price.

Last summer I bought two 1222D's (same as the 1242d with two 2ohm voice coils) and they are danm loud and super clean. I liked them so much that I have bought two more last winter. I'm just working on the box for them, can't wait to see what four will sound like. Ported is the best way to go with these subs.

Here is a video of them in action

Try using internet explorer to open it, it's a window media player file.

just copy and paste it into your address bar. works fine. I'm getting two of those this week, but it's going in a sealed box. I expect good things. Ported would definitely give you more output, but I need space. Alpine recommends 1.7 cubes gross internal for two of these sealed, which is what I'm doing. I will let you all know how it sounds...v

^^they don't actually recommend one or the other. I think it's an application, personal preference, space available for your subs kind of thing. I personally think if space is not an issue and you want as loud as possible...go ported. That's not an option for me this time, as such I've decided to go with sealed. As I mentioned in another post, I am very satisfied with the small sealed box I am using now. I have more than enough bass(even using my old Infinity ref1230's in a box they were not designed for). I expect the Alpines, being in the recommended sealed box, will sound even better and louder as they will be getting(and are able to handle) 1200watts rms. The current set up is only getting 600watts. Anyway, I will let you all know what I think as soon as I install them and tune it properly.
