Hey, I've got a short somewhere in my wiring for my stereo. I just don't know where.
I blew a fuse a few days ago and went to put another new fuse in and it blew instantly. I know this means that I have a short somewhere, probably just the insulation rubbed off a wire somewhere and is touching metal.
I have a multimeter, but I don't know where to test for a short??
and do I test with the car on or off??
please explain, more details the better

The power wire runs from the deck, through the dash and mixes with a bundle of other wires (I'm assuming heater, blower, clock, etc) and goes to the battery straight from behind the dash to under the hood...

unplug the harness to the cig lighter and see if the problem goes away.

the other circuitd that come to mind that may be on the same circuit is either
interior light and horn and poss dash lights
dont chase chafed wiring unitl you check all the circuits that connect to that fuse.
But if my cig lighter works, wouldn't that mean that the circuit is fine??

Thats what I was thinking. What else may be linked to that fuse.

What fuse are you blowing?
* At the fuse panel?
* The fuse in the back of the HU?
* An inline fuse behind the deck?
* Or did you run your own wire from the battery with a fuse at the battery?

Put the Ohm Meter to the OHM setting. remove the faulty fuse.
Test the wires to see which is shorting to ground by putting one test lead to chassis, and the other to various 12V.wires, until the meter shows continuety.
