Who makes good decks these days?
As for good decks, I'm still a Pioneer boy, AVH-P4000 and AVH-P4200 are in two of my current installs and if I do my mom's car it'll be an AVH-P3300 in all likelihood.
However I think the Pico fuse issue is related to the higher end models, like the AVIC, etc.
You're safe with the jvc's. I've installed many and they are fairly user friendly and have good features and sound for the buck. 2 1/2v preouts are a bit of a drag compared to their older 5v stuff (still a couple available this year) you have to move up quite a bit in Alpines lineup to get similar features as the JVCs. Also not too many guys making non touch DDs.
I was plaing with a Kenwood DD last saturday. I missed the model number but it retails for $499 and is essentially a JVC in Kenwood clothing. The one thing that really impressed me was the processor speed. When I touched the screen it responded immediately, something most units can't manage and it drives me nuts.

Eclipse cd-5030
Its used, and almost the same price I paid for it new ($300). The deck is Amazing IMO. At the time I couldn't find a deck with those features offered at a decent price.
