i've used Mcintosh amps and several other high end units (tru C7, Audison VRX, DLS, etc.) and the Mcintosh still holds a very dear place in my heart. they are built like tanks (and usually weigh just as much). their sound is simply excellent... i won't compare it to others but i would find it very unlikely even the most discerning listener would have any complaints about them. if something doesn't sound right with a mcintosh in your system, then go find the problem with your speakers.
regards,

Ive used some of thier classic home audio gear from tubes to solid state.....

If you wanted some of their car amps for the name and style go for it... but I probably wouln't be able to justify the price tag

Yeah i never heard Mc Intosh amps but from the reviews on some of there amps there up there in state of art sound Pricing there expensive i agree but i reckon they would be worth buying they look built to last they must be a fixable amp aswell not a throw away like some amps
