Ok, I have three questions...

1. Is MDF wood harder to work with than particle board?
2. Which is a better enclosure material, MDF or particle board?
3. What are your opinions on JVC head units? I really like this in dash dvd player that they make and I was wondering if JVC has very good sound quality and overall quality.

 

MDF is the way the go. It's much easier to work with and is a lot smoother. I've done a partical board box before, but it ended up turnign into a pile of junk. and as for JVC I havn't heard much complaints about them

mdf is not the best amterial to use as ther are better. but when you weigh the costs and ease of use....mdf is the way to go you cant beat 25 a sheet of 3/4. you want a non porous suface. most guys will easily fiberglass thier enclosures to achieve that but mdf i a very porous surface....i really dont think that partile board and sub box should not be used in the same sentance. however i did see a particle board extreme vehicle hit 172.5 at finals....

yea mdf is the way, but does any one else hate cutting it...such fine dust


me and my buddy both have older JVC decks (few years) and they skip like mad in the winter

 

Alright, thanx. I guess mdf is the way to go and sounds like jvc headunits are questionable so i will have to do without a dvd player. thanks for the replys.

 

have to ask what is the best to make boxes out of ?
i like glassing my box ,i can think of one or two besides mdf but can you give a list ?

 

Baltic Birch Plywood. fricking expensive and only comes in 5foot x 5foot pieces

Any other void-free plywood is also a better enclosure material than MDF but it always costs way more and is harder to find.

 

if i had to pick wood it would be some sort of birch. i heard that there is a wood from a tree in south america that grows like and inch every year. and by what i hear its damn good.

but if i had to go non wood.....concrete and thick friggin plexi...solid steel and possile alimunum......i dont mean 1/2 inch thiick....i mean 2 - 4 inch thick.

but that is me. a total non porous surface. (although any material will havce pores to a certain extent.

id make my own box out of resin of some sorts. pour it as thick as i needed it and make it as sturdy as i wanted it to be.

am i wrong?....there is no such thing as over kill. just look at our batteries on the shadow that run one amp and then tell me that 4 inches is too thick....lol

 

wow did we get over our heads im just going to use cardboard now so i can cut with scissors and CA glue to save on cost.
