I just had my VW in for warranty work (the damn engine warning light keeps turning on for no apparent reason). When I take my car in I usually take the face off of my deck just for precautionary measures, but this time I didn't. I got my car back, jumped in, waited for the glow plugs to warm up (Diesel Golf ) and started the car. Low and behold my deck wouldn't power up. Of course my heart skips a beat and I furiously press buttons to no avail. My deck was dead.

Luckily I sat down last night and read the manual. All I needed to do was reset the deck and my baby was healthy again. I'll just put out this warning though. It's probably a good idea to remove as much of your audio gear as possible when you take your car to the shop. I'm pretty sure that a shop is not liable for the stuff inside your car unless they state otherwise.

I'm extrememly glad that my deck is alive, but I never want to experience such a traumatic event again! Once I get my amp I'll be scheduling an install with Perfect Tones (because of all the hype they've received here on the board) for an LCD and Xbox install. In the past week I've been furiously replacing the DVD drive on the xbox and accumulating parts for the install. The last thing I need is a crapped out deck.

Dale.

Once I left my car at the dealership for an oil change while I was at work.. I always turn my deck off when I drop off the car. When I came to pick it up, the deck was on, turned up, bass up to like +6, and tuned to a radio station I never listen to. At the time I had my older system installed, which was pretty loud.. guess some kid wanted to give it a listen.. I wasnt too impressed. I should have reported it, but I was in a rush to get somewhere so i left it.

Simple answer:

Bring a service contract with you to any place you get work done on your car. The contract should state what is in your car, what is not allowed to be touched, and a contact # if they have to touch any of it.

I would also include stipulations as to where the car is parked overnight.

And good luck getting 99% of the shops on EARTH to sign such a document...

Although I think its a great idea in theory...its probably more trouble than its worth in practice...

Just deal with shops you trust for maintenance, as you would/do for audio....

I always like to have a small toggle switch hidden inline with the remote. When you take the car in for service just flip the switch and nothing will come on.

i have a removable face plate. although also word to the people who strap their gear in. remove it when taking it in. the clowns i took it in too was warned but i guess they did not remember or something. they had to fix the 4x4 system and have to remove the radio surround cause the switch+lighter+radio is all on the surround. well i guess the could not so they pride it at one corner while testing the switch. they scratched up the surround pretty bad and bent it. well they ended up ordering a new one for me + on top it has the fog light switch hole i did not have on mine .

I havn't had much problem with this type of thing, but I did have problems with having body work done on my car last summer, when I got it back, my 6x9's in the back were making a godaweful noise, and my deck was full of sand, because they'd taken the windshield out before they sandblasted it, and hadn't covered the deck, or the rear speakers, so both had filled with the abrasive they'd used to blast the car. future shop replaced the deck on warranty (barely) and I got the shop to replace the 6X9s, but it should never have happened.

They'd also pulled my subs out of my trunk and thrown them back in, hadn't reattatched them like they were when the car got there, so the box got banged up on the way home.
