when you leave, get fired etc from a shop do you think that is is right to contact customers that you gained from that shop to let them know about your new place of employment or shop, in other words solicit them, you know like calling up a competitiors client and trying to solicit his business, seems like a real desperate scumbag thing to do. if the customer finds you on thier own, fine, but to call them and ask them to no longer shop with the old employer but to deal now with you

Aquiring customers phone info from a store computer system in my opinion is not right.
I see no problem with installers self promoting but to use the company records to contact any of these people is not proper.
Some installer feel that because they did the install that it is there personal customer but forget that the place of employement has abled them to do such an install...
If that makes any sense, but it is my take

Well here is a situation, you tell me.
I got laid of on Tue cause he couldn't afford to pay me anymore. I was in the middle of a job shaving and modifing a trunk lid for a customer that the other installer had done a complete system for. The customer is a cousin of a friend of mine so when I told the friend I was gone he asked what was going to happen with his cousin's car. I told him to have his cousin call me if he had any questions, he called me and asked what happened which I told him. He asked what I was going to do now and I told him that I was thinking of doing my own shop. Customer asked what was going to happen to his car now, I told him that I had no idea but he should call the shop. He asked if he could bring it to me to have it finished, I told him the other installer was more then capable and if he was happy with his previous work then by all means have him finish it, if he was not happy with this work give me a call. He was going to go into the shop and find out what was going on. I haven't heard from him since but the shop is mad cause they thought I went after him to get his business.
Right ? Wrong ?

If (when) I leave Futureshop, I have every intention of taking out a full page ad in the newspaper, stating I am at such and such location and would be happy to serve any previous or new customers. I would never keep track of customers phone numbers etc. to try and "steal" them away, but I have no problems paying out of my own pocket to advertise my move.

you are absolutlely right in going about it in that way dwvw, contacting customers in any other way is wrong, if they go out of their way to get in touch with you, thats different.

I ride the line on this one. Yes I can accept that the business facilitates the customer for the installer but I have also seen a few shops with their install picture albums proudly displayed to lend credibility when I know damn well the individual or team that created that work is no longer there...
Should one raid the company customer database? No. Would I mention it to a customer that I ran into on the street in an attempt to bring him to my new shop? In a heartbeat...

i agree dukk but the jobs in the photo album are there because of the shop and the products they sell and the install they provided. if we were to take out the out baecause an installer left, witht he way installers change employers these days there would be only a few pics left

I'll agree for day to day stuff but specialized construction is different IMO. If the book has metal and/or extensive glasswork but their current installer is a square box king then that's akin to false advertising.
Of course, as always, this is an opinion.
