Amp Problem?

Hi there guys i have a question for you. I recently installed my
RE SE12" sub, and hooked it up to my amp. It was playing fine. I built a custom enclosure, and then put the sub in and wired it up EXACTLY the same way as i did before. Now everytime the sub starts pounding the amp starts cutting off. on the screen says "curr" and the manual say "the amp has been shut down due to excessive current". ANy idea what this could be? Same fuses same wire same everything. There is a 250A fuse at the front, and the amp has 4 x 20amp fuses. ANy help on this would be greatly appreciated. Reason i put it in this section is because I know you guys are alot more experienced with power and such. THanks alot!

Could possibly be the new enclosure. The sub might be working too hard cuasing an excessive current draw to the amp. Try the original enclosure again and see if the problem goes away.

If I had to guess it sounds like you have a load that is below what your amp is stable at. But that is just a guess. What is the resistance of each voice coil on your new and old subs? Also what kind of amp are you using?

the resisitance on the sub is dual 4 ohm, dropped to 2 ohms on the amp. alpine mrd m1001 monoblock amp, and was wired exactly the same way in the old smaller box, until it broke the box!

So your amp has a rating of 80A (4-20A), and your inline fuse at the battery is a 250A? then yes it can be drawing over it's limit, since it's going into protection b/c your main fuse will not blow first since it's fuse is too large, but it's surprizing that one of your 20A ones from the amp didn't blow.

What are your settings like on the amp?

all of the settings on the amp are turned down, gain and everything else, i just cant seem to figure out what the problem is. if the speaker wires were corssed, would that caus this to happen?

I would check your sub to see if you shorted your coils. Put a meter on it and check to be sure it is still 2ohms. Also see if the message changes if you disconnect the sub all together.

^ I am with smartie check and then double check the wiring... should not be an impedance issue due to the speaker (if it is operating properly) or due to enclosure size look for lousy connections or a place where it an exposed wire could touch the vehicle

this is not part of the issue but a 250 amp fuse is WAY too big, check the owners manual but I bet a 80 or 100 amp fuse is plenty.

do you think it could be the size of the fuse? causing the problem?

Yes, they think that it is the fuse, that's why they suggested it. Try reading some of the suggestions and then working with it.
