audible distance
How far away can the sound of the sub be heard? I know there are like a zillion factors to take into consideration but generaly speaking, 1/4 mile, half mile or more? I would bet my system is good for a 1/4 mile.

Under perfect conditions. Hmmm how about floating the car on a barge in the middle of a lake at night. No wind, or waves, no other boats. Use a measuring device with a laser on it to figure out the distance. Get in a row boat and slowly move away from the car with the trunk open and facing you. Thats ideal conditions to me. I'm talking about the items in my sig. Would that be good for a few miles?

um yeah ........... you couldn't hear my 01 reg cab from more than 5-6ft away, yet it managed to bump off 144+ db and I've had other cars way quieter than it and you could hear em from a long ways off
it all depends on the vehicle and how well it's sound deadened
and BTW this has got to be one of the stupidest topics I've seen, sorry I had to say it ......... IMO you goal should be to not be heard at all outside the car .......

I'll try to give you some insight on my experiences since I'm a courteous guy when playing my music (turn down at lights, no playing at night in residential areas, turn down system when there are old people, kids etc..." but I don't agree with the views of the "it's better to keep the bass in your car/you are an embarrassment to the dBDrag sport" extreme SPL nerds.
Anyhow to answer your question... my system is loud inside to the ear and it is hard to breathe when it is going but yet it is fairly quiet outside. However, when you move maybe 100m away from the vehicle the bass is quite audible.
The type of subwoofers also seem to make a difference. In a 97 Explorer I have a Kove Armaggeddom-M 15" ported and it is very loud for daily driving. With the hatch open it's not that great however my buddies two Pioneer Best Buy 10s in a prefab sealed box were insanely loud outside with the hatch open... inside the cabin they weren't nearly as loud as my Kove.
In addition, sealed boxes are louder in my experience outside than ported boxes. Andy explained this by the fact that:
-a sealed box is like a 4th order BP box in your car with the windows down
-a ported box is like a 6th order BP box in your car with the windows down
A 4th order is harder to screw up than a 6th order BP.
The car makes a difference too... I know a guy with a Nissan NX2000 with a couple 8" MTX Roadthunder ghetto subs and you can hear that vehicle for what i'd guess is a good 1/4 mile... and probably even more on a quiet night.

Hey guys, don't jump all over him let. I was about to do the same thing when I reallized maybe its not that he wanted to be heard from far away, but was rather curious as to who far away he could be heard.
I know even though I don't drive around all the time with the system blasting it has crossed my mind more than once as too how far it could be heard from.
