an engineering background doesnt mean you'd be good at spl... anyone with a meter that is willing to give up some time and money can hit high numbers...

for exapmle, last year I knew nothing about spl till I got some very good advice, "... go buy a meter, and test, test, test..."
So I did. I tested almost everything I could come up with and some from what others tried. Everything I know is from trying different things, no matter how rediculous it might seem.

I guess an enginnering background might help, but it's not everything... I dont have that and I hit pretty decent numbers

If you can get your hands on a suitable electret mic, a preamp, and an RMS multimeter you can measure SPL up to around 140db....

Edit: you have to calibrate your mic against another spl meter, (readings are taken from voltage off the preamp)
