Honda CRX - how to get loud?
#11
I found the regular 29X29X14 CRX box to be not very loud at all (about 4-6 dB down from my other boxes no matter what I tuned it to, and the SPL went up as I made it smaller. However all the really loud boxes I made sounded terrible with music since they were only about 2 cubes total.
I have worked with two CRX's and both had a resonant frequency around 50hz, but it was possible to force the loudest frequency in the car to be around 60hz by tuning the box higher. What I did with mine is ran with all 4 ports open for competition, then stuffed two ports to bring the frequency down to around 45 hz for daily. However when I started testing even smaller boxes, there was no way to make it sound good even by stuffing ports.

it sounds to me like its going to be a compromise - the typical CRX box, for the XXX12's seems to be the right airspace (give or take) for a reasonable sounding box - and the formula of subs up and ports back seems to make sense.....
I guess the customer is going to have to realize that we can only do so much with the car to make it both loud and musical - if he wants the extreme of loud, he's not gonna have something to listen to. if he wants the extreme of musical, its not gonna be as loud as it can be....
My guesstimate with this car, power and sub combo when tuned up correctly ought to go to the high 140's and still be pretty listenable.....hoping to tweak a 50 out of it with the right port combo (tuning much higher than 32/35 hz).... ahhh...the experimentation and guessing game of spl...isn't it fun?

like he said, either loud and sounds like , or sounds nice but not very loud (on the mic anyways). i daily drive with my spl boxes and at specific nots they get retarded loud but for the most part they really sound like crap.
i had another box with 3 12's that was tuned to like 30hz in a crx style box that was common chamber and it sounded crisp but to make it loud i had to put a colossus xx amp on it and really turn it up....but turned up too loud it would totaly out do my highs.

that might be the other option yuli - run the 4000XD at 2 ohms for daily street beating, and then a quick wiring change to run it at 1/2 ohm for burping....chris told me that the 4000 will take it and make a bunch more power for burping....
seem like a good idea? i could wire up a relay setup and switch to do the impedence switching automatically

u can do it but with that amp u have to know wtf u are doin to get the full burp at 0.5 ohm. it needs juice and a VERY strong remote wire signal. i remember in Chris' van we ran the remote wire right off the battery into the amps, otherwise they would protect as soon as the voltage in deck's remote wire starts to drop.
trust me, with the regular crx box it will be very loud for music. and it will do over 145 on the meter.

I'm looking into a custom wound alternator from Tsunami (can't seem to find anything else for this car - its an H20 bottom end with a B20 head) but right now its an 85A with a yellowtop under the hood and soon to be 3 yellows in the hatch with two full runs of 1/0 (maybe more )

listen to this joker I think 2 full runs will be enuf considering its not an SPL vehicle and that there are 3 batts within 2 feet of the amp (and that the amp only has single 1/0 inputs) and the way we do things, it won't be a spaghetti factory in the hatch like somebody's jeep I once saw <looks around> This car is being painted/airbrushed, treated to an H20/B16 swap, etc, so its entire existence doesn't revolve around just burps in a lane....we even vinyl/paint/carpet our panels and enclosures, flush subs and ports, and everything!!!! hahahah I know the spl'rs are cringing now
the build starts tomorrow - panels are out, sound deadening is being applied as we speak, and power cable goes in.... are we having fun yet?
