Junk in a trunk

So far with one beat up old 12 and a old school sony 2 channel amp i'v managed to to find myself a certified score of 138.4 lol.So i'v decided to play with this a bit more just for the fun of doing it and see what i can get out of it with a new box and shortly some bigger power.I seen on here tonight a guy doing a 95 grand am trunk build that was hitting 146 plus if i remember right. The one im building is a 96 4 door Ill put some pic's up as i go just so everyone can laugh alone with me at how much spare time i have lol.
just some info to start out before the i put pictures up the amp I'm using right now is a sony XM-6020 and the sub is one of my old beat up selenium's thats missing the dusk cap it has dual 2 ohm coils. My score of 138.4 was done in a rear facing box as i said above with that amp clamp @ 88 watts rms with 10 ohm rise on a full out burp @ 59 hrz more to come if your interested lol

His name is Derek. Fox_racing4 I believe. Thing is stupid loud and low. Honestly one of the loudest musical 4 doors I've seen to date.

crabmustang 08-10-2010 07:37 AM

Keep it up Tim, I love building\seeing budget builds. I think the shows should add a "Budget Build Class".

Oh ya bring on the pics :-)

Garett

DeadlySones 08-10-2010 07:37 AM

Tim, Derek/Dylan (twins) are hitting 146's @ 42hz on one Audiopipe 3K with a standard subs and port forward design. If you want more info send one of them a PM, they are a couple of my team mates and are really nice guys. :smilie_da I'm sure they'll tell you anything you want to know. They've ran MANY box's in there. They build a new box almost every month, lol.

As mentioned above they go by "Fox_racin4" and "Dylan" on forums.

whothennow 08-10-2010 08:16 AM

Wish i had a system in my truck so incould be on a team too.

JordyO 08-10-2010 10:49 AM

You work in a shop.... put something in :P

whothennow 08-10-2010 10:59 AM

True story but i have no experience with series tuned 6th orders. Obviously Paul and Derek do. So there.

fox_racin4 08-10-2010 11:00 AM

every box that has been in my grand am has had a peak at 32-34 no mattter that the box was tuned to

its done a 146@32h with 2 DD9512s

a 145.XX @32 with 4 10s

and right now its doing a 145.55@42hz with 2 12s on 3000rms with the box halfassed sealed from the trunk

do you know anyplaces that can get an alt? need a bigger one lol

whothennow 08-10-2010 11:22 AM

Yup i do. Pm me and I'll hooknyou up.

whothennow 08-10-2010 11:23 AM

Just for the record, I've got LOTS to learn about 6th orders. They are almost impossible to get perfect without tonnes of testing and tuning even for someone who has designed several dozen of them. Bose has the only so called perfect formula patent on 6th orders and everyone else is trial and error.

I've been told they are very limited in bandwidth and once the efficiency is maxed out they don't gain for crap, even with tonnes of power.

whothennow 08-10-2010 12:00 PM

So simple ported works inguess. Now to figure out 10's, 12's or 15's.

fox_racin4 08-10-2010 12:41 PM

i dont know 6th orders i have a guy who knows how to design them fairly well! haha

KillerCavi 08-10-2010 01:04 PM

i kinda thought it was impressive what i did with such little power and very high ohm rise lol. These guys are using 3 to 5 k and only 6 db ahead of me.Later today ill have some pic's up and ill be switching to a 600 rms amp so we'll see what happens on the term lab tonight

fox_racin4 08-10-2010 02:27 PM

im doing my #'s at a muchhhh lover freq to tho im sure if i could burp in the high 50hz area it would be slightly louder lol

KillerCavi 08-10-2010 02:40 PM

i had a 90 z24 with a trunk setup it worked really well but i was limited on room it tunned @ 56 hrz at the windsheild and did a 147.8 constant lol but i tell ya man it was the loudest 147 i have ever heard sounded more like a 150 it was sick

fox_racin4 08-10-2010 02:45 PM

i had a 1994 cav befor this... i could get 15T 36W and 33D into it if i needed to haha had to cut the opening behind back seat alot tho..

KillerCavi 08-11-2010 01:55 AM

So the new box is done but ran out of time to test ill have all the pic's plus some number up tomorrow night stay tuned guy's

WRONG....your in a trunk and no properly tuned trunk will peak much over 50hz. your tuning is due to poor calculating of the box "if you've tried as many as you claim" remember, box volume has the greater affect on frequency play than port tuning.

KillerCavi 08-11-2010 04:32 PM

Welcome aboard brother lol

Father Yuli 08-11-2010 05:57 PM

6 db's is 4 times as loud......

i dont understand why people waste their time with bandpass boxes? someone please tell me.

they are not the best for music and definately far from good for spl, especially in a car where most of the interior is stock.

fox man, you should be doing 150 with all that cone and power you have, your only down fall is the stupid bandpass box.

guys you gotta think. if these things were any good for spl dont you think everyone and their mom would be rocking these types of boxes??

they work well in a car where you can turn your car into a box itself (as in a band pass wall) but other than that it's a waste of time.

fox man, build a proper ported box with everything firing forward and you will gain like 3 db's, i almost guarantee you.

and Tim....., i have no advice for you. could actually use some of your advice.

His current setup Yuli is 2 12's subs and port forward. Box is just too big and not enough port.

MTA 08-11-2010 10:35 PM

deadly I built alot of cavaliers in the past... 150 is fairly easy... a single 3kw amp off a single optima 34/78 series battery

so we topped out at 136.7 rear facing with one 4in round port lol i hope to have all the pics up asap so tomorrow were going to move on to a front facing sub/port setup and see what happens.Yuli if you really do need some thought from me man name it lol you've helped me out many many times in the past

Just for the record... Derek (Fox_racin4) and Dylan have never built one of my designs. They get designs from some American. :eyes: ... and we'll never talk them into tuning anywhere near there. They're all about the lows. :smokin:

MTA 08-12-2010 05:59 AM

ok here's life made simple
if I remember... 32 or 34" wide... ( its been a few years) 24" deep and 14" or 15.5 high" you gotta measure... needs to have a folded port... it should tune 44-49Hz
just build it!
facing forward... box pucshed all the way to the back of the trunk yields best results... dont forget small angles in port and behind subs... to tune this box you play a bit with the size of the angle behind the subs.. the bigger you make it takes more air and tunes box higher... pretty easy ? now get building.. your port should be around 8" or so and the actual length what the subs see is close to 30"

whothennow 08-12-2010 07:39 AM

Think it'll work in a hatch?

MTA 08-12-2010 06:06 PM

it should say 8" wide and 30 long

and no dont use that box in a hatch...different car different loading
what car hatchback?

KillerCavi 08-13-2010 12:04 PM

lol ya thats about it barty were going to test the big square port tonight then the real build starts back seats coming out just like the white cavi build

KillerCavi 08-16-2010 12:48 PM

well the new box is on the building block and should be ready to put in the car tonight. So there will be some new pic's posted and some number's.This box is the front facing box with a single 12 that will be power'd by a sony 2002 gtr lets see where the number's go from here lol

Lookin good Tim, where's them numbas? :smokin:

MTA 08-17-2010 05:35 AM

not too bad... just seems a bit low on port area for SPL facing forward.
whats the tuning?
i love your clean glue joints :) lol

bart pyle 08-17-2010 09:44 AM

im going to say its right around 30hz.....it will sound awesome on the 600watt amp! for max spl, I think the port will have to be larger with less length but its still going to rock as is!!!

KillerCavi 08-17-2010 11:20 AM

thanks guy's its not much work to tune when the port is small but when you start off big its a bugger to re face the box to make the port smaller after its in the car lol.all the glue was cleaned up after the pictures lol as for what its tuned at the port calculater i used says 40hrz so we will see how acurate it is lol the ports 5x14x30 if i remember right so we will see tonight what its going to work like.Wolfman and i are testing as soon as were free from the days BS lmao

then bart showed up and says when was the last time you had the car running so we fired up the car and that brought us to these numbers

so all and all i would say i did an alright job on that box lol tonight were going to take some more port off and see were that gets us
