A line driver has purposes other than voltage, but they are typically outside the realm of those who are SPL inclined.
They not only provide a higher voltage, but typically a lower output impedance. This can help improve high frequency transmission as the capacitive and inductive effects of the interconnects are reduced.
Alma Gates used a PPI PC225 amplifier in the first incarnation of the Bronco as a line driver. The inputs on all 22 amplifier were paralleled to the output of this amp. Smart idea!
