Well after a couple of failed attempts at making a decent box for my new subs I have made this one. The port is 6 inches wide, 14 inchs tall and 19 inchs long. Subs in the box are incriminator audio lethal injection 12's. My amp is the BIG one now, was the smaller one before. That amp is a powerbass 4000xta powered by a xs power d3100 in the trunk basically right beside the amp.

I plan to use some b quiet and deaden the trunk totally and run some more zero gauge runs from the battery under the hood to the back battery. Also I am looking to buy a xs power d3400 to stick under the hood. The box will get some fiberglass resin here with in the next couple weeks. All and all I am impressed with what i have done so far with some words from a few people and thats about it. Thanks luke and dale, and bill need to get on that meter of your buddy.

that box looks like something marty would make

bjohnstone23 06-19-2011 07:37 PM

ya no, nothing to do with marty this box, this is a box design I came up with. Just a bunch of number crunching and trying to figure out an aprox port size and now this thing hammers in my car. Just in fact did some more sanding on it today and painted it. Gonna be re-installing all my gear in next week or two.

Just a small recommendation, sand the port opening a little to smooth it out, or add some PVC

bjohnstone23 06-22-2011 10:38 PM

I sanded that thing for 3 hours a few days ago and got the edges of the port smoother and rounder as well as I painted the box to.

Lord Huggington 06-23-2011 01:39 PM

Enough port area or is that box huge or tuned high?

bjohnstone23 06-23-2011 01:48 PM

box is not huge fits in the trunk of my cavalier no problem, and its tuned aprox for 45hz.

bjohnstone23 06-23-2011 01:50 PM

box dimensions are 34wide x 14 high x 18 deep. That total size including port

fresh1 06-23-2011 02:45 PM

I love the saftey measures taken in the trunk for the second battery.

bjohnstone23 06-23-2011 03:09 PM

much better safe then sorry. I would rather duct tape the hell outta it then let that massive battery arc out and start a fire or even worse cook my amp. Mind you there is so little room for it that u have to wedge it into place and with its weight its just sits there.

ChrisB 06-23-2011 07:57 PM

Maybe also try moving the amp to the top of the box and pull the box as far back as possible

kennedy8383 06-29-2011 01:30 PM

Look good

here is more photos of the wire i just recently ran and the box after being painted and sanded more. The amp is on top of the box now and box i all the way to back of trunk just waiting to get on a meter. Hoping next week sometime.

kennedy8383 07-13-2011 08:19 AM

Would be nice to see video of it

bjohnstone23 07-13-2011 09:48 AM

videos dont do it much justice to be honest with you, plus I have it all pulled outta my car for another re wire. I have done a few videos before all the wire and ya you can see my sunvisor flap like a piece of paper in the wind and my mirror is ready to fall off the window but other then that ya videos dont do it justice.

420guy 07-13-2011 08:43 PM

If you get some meter time and it's possible try the box turned around facing the back of the trunk pushed as close as you can without the cones hitting. In my Cavi I gained 1.5db just turning it around. Then another db by pushing it to about 2" from the back. Let me know if it does the same in yours.
Cheers

so yesterday i re-wired my car as someone was looking at buying it so i had to pull stereo out. Got everything all hooked up and its slamming again and got a chance to go on a meter saturday finally. 420guy I will try what you said as well as moving box back and forth. Hoping to be mid to high 140's. Here are pics of my most recent install of the wiring etc now. Yes the front battery looks like rats nest and is kinda a joke I agree just cant afford another dry cell at the moment.

luke99 07-14-2011 10:32 PM

looks good brian

LOWTONEZ 07-14-2011 10:59 PM

Keep it all facing in and seal it off from the trunk, best possible scenerio with subs and port facing the same way . If you do less then a 45 it would be a dissapointment, with all the excess of wire and work.

luke99 07-14-2011 11:01 PM

i predict a 46 to 47 out of this car , test box placement before u make any drastic changes to the car

bjohnstone23 07-15-2011 09:29 AM

less then a 45 would not be a as much of a disspoinment as you may think as I built every bit of this system by my self literally. I designed box myself, wired it myself everything all done by me. I ran the wire more due to fact that I drive for hour or 2 to work most of the time and I pound this shiz so to save alternator etc I added wire as was cheaper then another battery. Once again thanks luke for the wire. I predict I 146 to 148 maybe once I do some box moving etc I will be closer to a 150 but only time will tell.

bjohnstone23 07-16-2011 07:21 PM

did some testing today, hitting 145.3 at 49hz with the box in the pictures, then I swapped out to another box i built yesterday that is a little smaller and only has a 4 inch wide port. It peaked at 49hz aswell but was consistent constantly at 144.2 and up. I think my next step is spec a box for 49 hz and see how that does. The car responds best with the subs facing in to the car and right against the back of the trunk. Any more suggestions on what to try. I dont think sealing it off will produce bigger numbers as the box preforms best further into the trunk.

LOWTONEZ 07-17-2011 12:11 AM

If you dont want to seal it off, try subs facing into car and port out the back driver side. It works well too. Sealing it off from the trunk with the same box and equipment will usally always yield higher numbers. You will gain with more port area aswell, run 100+ sq.in. Dont tune your box so close to the cars peak frequency, tune around 40 hz and work with that.

bjohnstone23 07-17-2011 09:53 AM

the box I have now is just shy of 1 cubic foot of port actually. I am starting to think I need to do some deadening to see higher scores. subs towards back of trunk port into car doesnt sound like a bad idea either was tempted to try something like that, was also wondering how it would preform if i built a box that sat passenger side and had port firing toward driver side. everything is just gonna be a craps shoot from here on in i guess till i find what works for me the best.

bjohnstone23 07-17-2011 09:56 AM

I wont say I am disspointed by my 145.3 cause its not bad for being the one who did all the work himself but I'd like to see 147ish atleast outta this gear. I am tempted to say fu ck trying to get my cavalier loud and maybe building a box for my golf for the local show in sept. I wanted to try and make soundsgoods show on the 21st of august but who knows now. All in due time I guess with some more testing i will hit some solid numbers.

LOWTONEZ 07-18-2011 12:28 AM

Im telling you more port area will gain. Deadening will help also. But before you start tearing the car apart again some more. Try more port area and sealing it off facing into the cabin.

I would say you are putting up some deciant #'s already man good job for this build. Only up from here, Keep on it & you will only gain. Its all a learning experiance. I hope to see you in august & get to hear this setup ! If not I will deffinatly see you in creston man.

Take it easy & Keep on pluggin away it will only get better :)

bjohnstone23 07-19-2011 08:19 PM

started entering my box dimensions in a few different box calculators and found out that the box I originally built (the one in the photos on this thread) would have a tuning of aprox 49hz the way it sits. If i were to add size to the port i would only raise my tuning am I not correct? I also have a box that i built 2 days ago that has a 4 inch port and would have a tuning of around 43 hz. low tonez I already tried forward and sealed off and wasnt a gain for me was a loss. What i need to do now is decide do i try more with the original box or try to resin the newest box and see if I can pull some bigger numbers outta it.

luke99 07-19-2011 08:27 PM

for no deadner and no testing thats a great number forsure , keep in mind brians using a 600 rms sub good start

shiffty 07-19-2011 10:55 PM

hey can you give me the dimentions u used to build this? and where bouts u live?

bjohnstone23 07-21-2011 02:37 PM

video of my gear

LOWTONEZ 07-22-2011 03:12 AM

Nice vid. If you do add more port area to the box as it is, it will raise your tuning. Im suggesting you build a new box, with larger port area, and tune lower. IMO 49hz is too high for a j-body.

bjohnstone23 07-22-2011 08:59 AM

my car is responding to 49 hz neither of my boxes are tuned for it, the box u see in the video is tuned at 43 hz and the box i tested with last saturday was tuned right around 46 to 49 hz, The thing about making a larger port is needing a larger box, The box's that i have just barely fit as is so a bigger box is not an option. I just need to add some more deadner to the trunk lid and to the roof and doors and I will be louder.

Some people keep telling me make the box slide in from the rear seat, well thats a even smaller opening then the trunk lid and I dont wanna have to cut any steal as this is my daily driver and my kids sits in the back seat. I will get into test with the box I have now (one with 4 inch port) and see how it does now that there is some deadner in the trunk also.

audio1der 07-26-2011 04:56 PM

I love the car seat/sub arrangement- I'm in the same boat.
How did you calculate your port dimensions? I have some crazy numbers generated by the usual online port calculators for my box, and may have to use the 4" flared port I have en route when I think a slot port would yield higher DB.

smeerdude 07-28-2011 07:54 AM

Very nice build

bjohnstone23 07-28-2011 10:59 AM

thanks man, I am still trying to perfect it as much as possible, I want this thing louder. As luke did mention earlier on in this post I am only running 600 watt rms subs so I am limited to numbers i can produce as subs can only handle so much power. Some deadner, and some resin in my box would help me out greatly as well as another drycell battery under the hood. Hoping to make it to soundsgood audio show in coquitlam bc on august 21st but only time will tell if i can or not.

MikeMartell 07-28-2011 12:49 PM

Looks great so far, keep it up :)

Well since I started this post I have built a new box, blew subs and reconned them myself with some heavier duty dual 1 ohm coils. I went to western canadian finals and finished first in idbl stock 2 with a score of 144.6 and finished first in usaci trunk 1000+ with a score of 147.5. I then decided after reading some post on here and other places to try sealing off my trunk with a center port and this is what I came up with, I will now know what kinda numbers it is hitting till sept 25th.
