It's just a larger version of the 1700... which everyone puts on its side

As mentioned though, the manual says it can be mounted in any position.
Taken directly from the Hakwer site....
# MOUNTING FLEXIBILITY The ODYSSEY® battery may be installed on its sides at any angle without sacrificing any performance attributes. There is no fear of any acid spillage as ODYSSEY® recycles the internal gas during operation or charging.
While these batteries (and other gel type batteries) CAN be mounted on their sides or whatever, they will not work as well, or last as long, as if they were mounted traditionally.
In other words, you might be reducing it's life by a year or two. No big deal...
