subwoofer killer - what kills a woofer?
so i've been thinking about how to build my next box and set up the port, and i've been given some good advise, but i'm torn between spl and daily driving, also i want to have my sub's last a while, so i've seen alot of guys destroy subs at comps and i'm just wondering whats doing it, box size, port size, power or all of the above? i want to make a bigger slot port and i want to know how big is too big? keeping in mind i want to daily drive this box and make the subs last. the box i already made was a flop so i'm looking for more input.

boxes for spl generally are decent for the subs, as they are tuned higher then daily boxes, there for less movement, however they sould kinda like *** for music normally. People run a load of power to subs at comps, thats a good way blowing there up, A poor box can kill your subs pretty good aswell, there are many factors.
My port is 6"wide slot, I should have gone with a 8" port...

Distortion and Improper box are what kills subs, yes over powering will do it aswell but you have to get ALOT of power. I was putting 1500rms to a 400rms sub in the proper box no problem in my daily setup, same sub with 200rms and clipping and distortion would have blown.

ok so if i play 20 hrtz with a port tuned to 28htz say bye bye to the sub. ( thats what the first box ended up being tuned to i think) ok so 6'' slot, my box is 8.5 inches tall and 14'' deep(from outside face to inside of box) how do you calculate frequency? is it mathamatical? how long should the port be? the box is in a trunk car and facing forward, so i reallt can't use a round port. i believe the box is around 3 cube now.(including the 2'' wide slot port) i probabally should have posted this in enclosure building, but i'm trying to understand the science behind spl.

lol I agree with you here. HOw many people think just cause their amp says its a 1500 watt amp you are actually putting ALL 1500 watts tot he sub all the time? I bet if you clamped the output you were only putting 400 watts to it, and even less for the majority of the time you listen to it.
