A lot of things will kill a sub. To much power, distorted power, over excursion, box size, port size. The main thing for daily driving on a decent sub is to watch your thermal power handling. meaning the coils. folded cones and ripped surrounds are less of a worry then hammering on a sub for an hour or more with to much power or slighty clipped power when cruising around.

well i've always tried to build a box to manufacturer spec's, but it is it "safe" to make the port bigger to change the reccomended frequency?

lots peopleare retards with there gear. A sub is only as good as the person installing it, and building the box... 28hz is pretty damn low for subs LOL |
I wouldnt go anymore then 15-16 sq" of port per cubic feet for daily driving. Generally speaking tuning around 32-35hz with 12-13 sq" port per cubic feet is a pretty decent guideline to follow. Gives u pretty good range for daily. As far as net area that has to be determined by how much power ur gonna give a sub and how efficient u want the design to be with a given amount of power.
