Thinking of competing

I was thinking of possibly competing next year, my current setup is in my sig.

I was thinking of upgrading my sub, or would the L7 in a kicker box be good enough? I am not looking for super serious competition just fun stuff like bass race and maybe the odd DB Drag or the CSPL for a daily driver. I have 2 Memphis 1500D's and currently using one, I was wondering if a 15" DDz sub can handle 3000w RMS (2 Memphis 1500D's roughly 3600w) in a custom box.

:smilie_da:smokin:

Mat-Romain 10-15-2008 08:55 PM

to be honest a DD15Z would probably be a waste of money....3000rms wouldnt even come near hurting them, there intense

maybe a dd 9515 or soemhting along those lines

L7's can gte loud, just gonna take some work to figure out ur car/box

id sugest try with the l7 first, then if ur not happy, go with somehting bigger

Father Yuli 10-15-2008 09:47 PM

keep what you have and just make a more spl oriented box before you go spending money on more gear. see how that goes.

jonesbrooklyn 10-16-2008 10:56 AM

If your current setup doesn't work out for you, meaning the kicker then go with a TF1. They kicked ass at north american finals.:smokin:

Epica-Go-Boom 10-16-2008 05:48 PM

well my Epica no longer goes boom at the moment lol.

I was giving my buddy a ride home after work today and I wanted to show him my system. I put on a song with some good bass and set the volume to 45 (which is what Davis said is max right now because I am still breaking in the speakers) so after about six mins of that I got the evil eye from the lady in the car next to me and at the same time no more boom and a funny smell...

kicker sucks :hah:

If I finish work early tomorrow I will drop into selective sound to see whats up...

Epica-Go-Boom 10-16-2008 05:57 PM

also since it is a daily driver I would also like SQ or atleast not a one note wonder if you know what I mean, because I do like the BOOOOOM!

jonesbrooklyn 10-16-2008 09:22 PM

tf 1's are not just for spl alone. With the right enclosure it will sound amazing for daily as well.:smokin:

Epica-Go-Boom 10-17-2008 05:39 AM

what are the power ratings for the 12 and 15 inch?

turboeeyore 10-17-2008 08:57 AM

are you sure it was the speaker cause memphis amps like to fry for no reason? i've seen it happen alot. mosfets die.

Father Yuli 10-17-2008 05:25 PM

i bet you the fuse on the power wire just popped. nothing more.

Epica-Go-Boom 10-17-2008 08:05 PM

I checked the amp and the green light is still on also my 3004 was warmer then the 1500... and my cap is still reading fine. so I think the VC's just melted lol...

Epica-Go-Boom 10-18-2008 11:44 AM

it has been confirmed the VC's were destroyed :hah: I should have my new sub next week.

Father Yuli 10-18-2008 11:54 AM

you must be doing something really wrong. it's not possible to break an L7 with so little power in a typical application.

so little power? they are rated for 750rms and mine was getting 1500+ rms (I was told by someone that the 1500D pushes closer to 1800rms), Selective sound set the amp and I never touched it so I would say it was just over powered.

I was just playing around with the HPF? on my deck, I had the mids at 80 and the sub at 125 (it jumps from 80 to 125)....

Father Yuli 10-18-2008 12:17 PM

well realistically you never get rated power out of an amp when it's hooked up at its lowers rated load. There is such a thing as impedance rise. So even when it's hooked up at 1 ohm, as soon as the sub starts to move the amp begins to see 2 or 3 ohm. Realisitcally that sub was getting maybe 750 watts. There is also such thing as voltage drop, which also significantly decreases amp's power output.

take a multimeter and hook it up to a sub, then push on the cone and you will see what im talking about. as soon as the coil begins to move ohms no longer stay the same. it can go up by as much as 6 times.

in a reali life application no amplifier produces it's rated power when it's hooked up at one of the rated loads. you need to hook up an amp MUCH lower than it's rated to handle to get close to full power out of it. But then of course, you run into a high risk of blowing up and voiding the warranty.

Epica-Go-Boom 10-18-2008 12:23 PM

it was hooked up at 2ohms which is max on the 1500D, and when my car is running my system runs around 14v... this is why I was asked before about running at 2ohms so this wouldnt happen, but now I need the power I am addicted so I cant go back now :hah:

as for moving the cone, the L7 is now Davis's new paper weight and the VC's are fused together... :D

Father Yuli 10-18-2008 12:24 PM

if i have to take a guess that amp was really seeing 4 ohms or more. so the sub wasnt getting close to 1500 watts.

Epica-Go-Boom 10-18-2008 12:31 PM

so why would it fry? I am not being sarcastic I appreciate the input. also would it be worth upgrading to a Solo X or keep with the L7?

Father Yuli 10-18-2008 01:30 PM

distortion could have done it. could be a bad amp. who knows.

if u fry another one then try a solo x

jonesbrooklyn 10-18-2008 01:52 PM

Forget the Solo X.
TF1's, TF1's, TF1's, TF1's...:smilie_da

HEY 154.4 2 10'SOLO xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxX NOT TF1

Epica-Go-Boom 10-18-2008 07:26 PM

well actually I am going to go with Duel 12" L7's on one 1500D, and if for some strange reason I still fry subs I will try some competition grade subs...

that may be true but you ain't ever tried TF1's before now have you??? And don't bring da same bullshit sayin audioque cause dats played out bro. There is a difference and you know so don't play dumb:smokin:

PsychoAcoustics Canada 10-19-2008 09:17 AM

Hmm 154.4 with 2 10 inch solo x's 156.6 with 3 10 inch tf1's. i don't think adding a third sub would gain you 2.2 db would it?

Father Yuli 10-19-2008 01:22 PM

there is going to be a reference to a time line now.

well kicker is slacking, I was suppost to have my dual L7's 2 weeks ago but still nothing so I am leaning towards dual TF1 12's if kicker cant come through this week...

Mine's broken in the same spot from my DD. If that's a 15 we need talk some box design.
