sooooo heres a new chapter to the copper vs cca debate:

copper vs aluminum voicecoils

what is the difference? it seems that many companies offer the standard copper coil, but for those looking for spl oriented subs they are urged to order with aluminum coils. wouldn't copper be the better choice here? and wouldn't copper clad aluminum be the best of both worlds?

 

From what I have read Fresh the aluminum is lighter than copper and is why it would be better for SPL. But that's as far into as I can go lol

 

Aluminum is not only lighter, it also dissipates heat more efficiently.

 

I think you should not take this in consideration when buying a new subwoofer, sometimes in a motor design the CCA will be worst than copper in SPL, despite being lighter. All the parts glued together is what make it good or bad.

 

when you are over powering a sub by 2 or 3 times of its rated RMS rating it doesnt really matter what the coil is made out of.

 

This is incorrect.


Aluminum is lighter but copper is more electrically and thermally conductive...

It also has a lower expansion coefficient so you get less power compression as it heats up, which also allows for a tighter gap...


I prefer copper coils, hands down.... moving mass isn't necessarily a bad thing either....

this is an on going debate without a conclusive outcome, for a reason.

 

I don't want to "conduct" the heat in the coil, I want to dissipate it as quickly as possible. Yuli does make a point though... when your hitting them with 3x rated power it isn't going to make much difference.

 

I'm pretty sure in order for the heat to dissipate, the coil needs to be able to move it...


I agree long term thermal powerhandeling dosen't mean as much when you are burping your sub for 3 seconds yuli.. but for those of us who use our drivers for anything else other then 3second spl burps it certainly does make a difference...
