HI there, I have the skeleton of a Ground Zero "RadioActive" 15 DVC. quite the sub, but due to some bad amp clipping, the coils are toast. There is a place in Calgary Called "Speakers Only" that deal in the repair and 'customization' Apparently, the sub can handle 1000 RMS, as I was told by a guy that used to sell and install them lots a few years ago on the East Coast.

So now I have whats left of the sub. And my question is is it worth fixing?, if it was possible for them to build a custom sub, (which they can). They can install an aluminum cone, and other beefy stuff, making a custom SPL sub: is this worth doing? The cost is at LEAST going to be $130. I paid $50 for it last summer. I know I got quite a deal, but what do you think? Yuli, Tim Ballie, HARDWRKR, Fat W., DVWV, DUKK and all the other too-numorous CCA brain-i-acs. You help would be greatly appreciated

how big was the coil? how deep is the gap? if its like a 3 inch coil with a nice gap allowing to fit a 40+mm coil u could probably make yourself a nice Frankentsub

Thanks Yuli, I'll ask. I'll write those specs down and call him tommorow. I also have the motor structure off of my old Kove M15. before I fried that too WOW, Im such a fan of ultra-linear!!! That Kove Sub just had a single VC, but it was HUGE, it had a REALLY beefy 3.25" coil. with very thick wire. That is my other option. So perhaps I can use that motor if the GZ doesn't pan out

No offense but it wasn't the amps fault that a clipped signal caused a burnt coil. The amp may not do its rated power but it does make power and it is the user who is at fault for not recognizing when the amp is clipping that caused the damage to the driver.

Learning how to spot when your amp is clipping should be found out before you destroy an even better sub.

some people have an ear for it, I know Rob does, Its hard to tell when the sub is overloaded, and when the amp is clipping, as far as Im concerned. I was using the amp well within its rated RMS, and still. The amp wasn't maxed or crazy loud. yet this still happened. the amp had 4 X 40amp fuses, so I thought I would logically be able to dish out about 600 RMS or so at any given level. It susposed to do 1000 RMS at 2 ohms, which is what the sub was, it wasn't maxed, yet in no time at all the VC was smoking up a storm, like I had to pull over, and it wasn't on for very long either. I've just never seen that happen with any Kicker or DD amps, or any other good amp. It was just an all around bad experience. But anyway, what would anybody recommend?

I'd reccomend you pay more attention to your volume. I have an ultra linear on a jug 15 running at 1 ohm ..........lets just say i'm not to gentle on the volume myself.whether demoing it or what ever its been going strong for 4 - 5
months now and no problems. I'd have to say your case was user error.

Since I think the amp you are talking about can dish out more then 1.5KW at 1ohm... it would definatly put out more then 1KW at 2ohm if you were driving it into distortion...

Not really the amps fault though...

Also, you must have been clipping pretty fraggn hard to increase output by more then 10 or 20 watts

I think this is mostly due to a woofer with an optamistic rating coupled with music w/high duty cycle, long periods of play, and perhaps some clipping to boot...

If you can recone for less money then a replacememt go for it... ask em if they can measure new T/S param's if you intend on porting/bandpass..

FYI, if you were a little more carfull you probably could have salvaged the cone/surround..

Okay, enough about the amp. Its sold, and I'll never even touch Ultra-Linear again as long as I live. So thats done.
Anyway, Im looking for peoples opinions on any mods to the Ground Zero Sub design. has anybody have any experience using aluminum cones? how about Single voice coil opposed to DVC? what do you guys think?

Is the model # on the sub QZRW15? If so, I have the T/S specs on Bassbox if you want them.
