Red face

HI guys. I installed a ZR240. the sub its powering is a 12" DVC 2 4ohm coils. 400 watts RMS. Its running 2 ohms (both coils in parallel) The Amp susposed to put out 400 watts RMS at 2 ohm bridged, or so Rob "Loud brown kicker colt" says. When I crank it, the sub really moves LOTS! but at a given threshold of volume input, the sub gets a little distorted, and I smell that classic: voice coil burning sensation. I'm assuming through experience, thats because the amp is clipping. But I was wondering if the sub is just simply over-powered, and thats why its cooking the coils. I really dont want to fry this sub, if I need to trade up for a bigger amp that can EASILY handle this sub, then I will. A lot of you guys know a lot about this sort of thing. Come to think of it, Im pretty sure, when the volume is really high, there is probably a measurable voltage drop at the amp power input terminals. And as a result, the amp is clipping. is that whats doing it? Thanks

It all depends on how you have the amp setup as well..How far are the gains turned up?How much volume from the deck are you giving?

I get that smell every so often from the Pioneers when I give er full bore and I understand its a common thing from Kicker subs as well...

There's a lot of varibles that could be causing it...

It would help if we knew what sub and the kind of the box it is in.. but... If you hear harmonic distortion chances are its comming from the amp.... (this usually sounds different then distortion from a distressed woofer does)
But if you smell roasted voice coil, that is a definate indication that you are overpowering the sub !

Turn the gains down... a larger amp will not help..

I would say that if you are hearing it start to sound like poo then you probobly are turning it up way louder than it should go causing distortion of the output of the amp and distortion is the quickest way there is to smoke a woofer.

if the sub is new they tend to stink the first couple of times that you heat them up, but if it is changing the sound then you are probably clipping the amp, or pushing the voice coils out of the magnetic gap, thus creating lots of extra heat , but no extra sound

The box is ported. If its was a totally sealed box, and I could still smell that horrible aroma, then I'd really be in rough shape!!! The coil should never heat up. That means something is big time wrong, and I dont know what that is. I think your right "Mikeone" the sub only smokes at loud volume settings, only at really low freqencies, such as less then 30 HZ, which is less then the port tuning.

I imagine you are totally screwing the pooch on this one...

Amp is current clipping, sub is driven past Xmag, below tuning... also being overpowered thermally...

Man.. some people...

uh oh, I think I sense and insult here. Okay, lets go over the amp clipping which results in over-excursion due to exceeding the subs Xmag. I dont know what could happen here, this is a little beyond my realm of knowledge, help please!!!
