I hope you didn't take that the wrong way, I just thought I'd point out that they are in the same price bracket, I also agree with your statement on HLCD's....gotta love horns.

what speakers would you recommend as better value than the focal?
DLS,</font>
Based on what?

DLS sets are in the same price bracket as Focal...except that DLS doesn't have a set with a Berillium tweeter and an $8000 price tag.
DLS is nice, I'm not disputing that.....I'll stick with my Utopia's though, thanks.
</font>
Oh no no I was just stating that as my opinion. The utopias are an amazing sounding set. I just personally like the DLS Iridium 6.5 comps. They come in around the same price as the utopia 6.5 set and have, non pressed paper cone, neo motor, 3" coil and soft textile dome tweeter. In my opinion no set sounds better then the next, they all sound different. It is all in the eye of the beholder 100%.

If we were only limited to price and it did not have to be a component set, I would say that a set of HLCD's with a good mid bass driver will smoke anything out there. Again personal opinion, I have heard and owned many many high end comp sets and three way sets from Rainbow, Focal, DLS, Macrom, MB Quart, Alpine F1, Dynaudio, and others in that realm and am yet to hear a set that could compete with an Image Dynamics HLCD component set which is their entry level horn and mid. When properly tuned they will blow any mid/tweet combo out of the water and still be at the $1000 Canadian retail price range, which is like any good high end comp set. Again I say in my opinion.
</font>
HLCD will blow away any mid tweet out of the water.

Well my understanding of good sound is way off then. Maybe if I was in a concert hall or auditorium I may attempt to agree with your statement. Not in a car though

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Kodas... Are they not that great? I haven't heard them personally, but most of the testimonials I read are positive, especially concerning the midbass output. Has anyone heard the eD components?

There is a store here in Calgary that sells REALLY good 6.5's. They are not components, just raw 6.5" subs. they are 100 watts RMS each, and sound GREAT. only $22 each at Voss electronics. Good place to go. I'm having a subwoofer box built for a pair of those right now, can't wait to see how they sound.

ok....looks like this thread took off after i created it....

anyway, if got my pair picked out for the front, a GOOD set of Macrom's 6.5'' components....

now all i need is something for my rear fill. basically, i just want to fill the sound in the back and have it LOUD without distortion so that my sound level can match my bass level. but for the backs i want to watch my budget too. any suggestions on 6.5''s that can handle some good power but not too expensive?

yeah man, go to Voss, there are these 6.5"s subs that rock, they are awesome sounding, and can handle 180 watts RMS each, with 96 db/effeciency.

Great little drivers for $23 each

^^^ I totally agree. If you know what you're doing and you're on a budget, raw speakers are the way to go. Best bang for buck.

I would even go as far as to say let the 6.5 subs roll off naturally.
