Alpine CDA 117...thoughts??

Just released and looks like it has few good features, not the least of which is the ipod digital connection, good clean looks, t/a, better eq than the last batch. Why can't they just add to great features that they have already had in the past? Use the bass engine pro, motorized swing face, and multi colour from the 9835, 24 bit dac from the 9887, ditch the amp, and bada-boom you have a great deck!! Can't cost too much more (maybe except for the swing face mechanism, but even that is max 50.00). The 117 atleast has 4 volt outs, decent eq, T/A, and crossover. The big feature for me is the digital ipod connection though.

Whats the expected street price for this? It looks very nice I think. How many pre outs does it have? (it carries over the 9887's crossover right?)

I have to take some of this back....the T/A, EQ, and crossover are basically the same as the bass engine pro from the 9835, except the EQ has both graphic and parametric mode and 10 presets (bass engine only had 3, and no graphic mode, so this is better). Price should be around 300.00 retail as Crutchfield is selling them for 350 us, and it's 4volt out. Looks like my only gripe is the multicolour and swing face, and maybe the 24 bit dac, but it does say burr brown dac on the Alpine site, and the cda-117i from europe says 24 bit dac on that site. Anyway 24 bit is not a deal breaker for me, as my 9833 has 1bit dac's and sounds great. I think this might be my new deck!

but can you run active with the built in crossovers and outputs or does it require a seprate processor.. H701 or similar? Seems like it would be quite good value if it did the above without the need for additions.

yep...just like the 9835/33, front tweets, front mids, and subs...all active. I downloaded the manual, it has 90% of the features i want, including the ipod usb digital connection. Just wish the North American version had the 4 colour(red, green, blue, and amber) buttons like the European model.

CDA-117 is okay

Just installed one into a 2005 Bentley Arnage LWB. It replaced a CDA-9855.
The customer thought it was too inexpensive, insisted on paying more, so I put in the PXA-H100 Imprint.
I ended up not using the Imprint-derived setting. Going by ear and RTA sounded better.
Good user interface, more intuitive iPod search with the control format as it now exists.
Similar (if not identical) performance to the CDA-9887.
The only drawback is the lack of a motorized face, as the Bentley radio location demands a tilted face to look really good.
Still, it worked out to the customer's satisfaction.

I'm debating the switch from my 9833, but I really like the swing face and variable colour as my dash is green, and my pxa-h701 controller is the green/amber unit. I'm looking into the European model as they have 4 colour, just not sure if the tuner will work here. What I really like is the ipod usb digital and the new search formats as 90% of my music is now encoded in apple lossless or wav on my ipod. My current set up uses the kca-420i, but searching is a bit of a pain with so many tracks, and I find that the cd versions have a higher signal level than the same track through the adaptor. They both sound the same, just the ipod is a little lower in output at the same volume level. It's a nice unit at the price point from what I've seen so far.

OK, correction! you do need the imprint module to do all the bass engine pro type functions as with the 9835/33 etc... so you can't do the active 3 way, you don't have 10 preset eq curves etc...What you do have is a basic high pass x-over...crap(why do they do stupid things like this?), a 5 band parmetric/ 7 band graphic eq and 6 ch T/A...these aren't bad. So, the xover is the weak part here, as is the lack of swing face(motorization...not a big issue at it's price point though), no multi colour( big issue for me, they could have atleast put the 4 colour like the european model). The benefits are the ipod digital usb connection, 24 bit burr brown dac, good looks, 4volt outs, and price. Still looks good overall for me as I have a Pxa-h701, so the sound tuning features are not an issue for me.

I have my 9833 in the shop right now do to some nasty Aux in noise. But I've considered jumping up to the 9887. I really don't see much of a market for the 117. The 9886 and 9887 cover most people pretty well.
