If they are anything like the previous type x's they are nothing special... IMO.. They are barely a step up from the Crappy type r's... for the average guy they are alright, but for the money you can buy much better. The only good sounding components Alpine had in there lineup was the F#1's and they were made by scan speak for alpine. They are the benchmark for all others!

I have the 5.25" set from the SPX-F17T set and I was very impressed with them. I ended up upgrading to the whole SPX-F17T set instead of DIY setup.

Those drivers mated with some decent tweeters would make a very nice 2 way active setup. Also I know someone that's selling the SPX-F17T passives for a good price and of course my 5.25" are currently on ebay.

I would bet that the new Apline's are quite good. They take much of the Scan design aspects and implement them in their new pro line. I have not heard them, but I am very interested in doing so.

I heard them yesterday for the first time and wow. i really wish I had spent the extra money on the pro series. the midbass is insane from those things. don't get me wrong, I love my reference series but the pro is worth it IMO. Just make sure you spend some time on the enclosure (0.5cubic foot rec.)
