I'm in the mood to try a different set of comps in my car for awhile. They need to be 6.5" and have a fairly shallow mounting depth (2.5" max).
I was set to get some Focal 165K2P's but they are a bit too deep. I was looking at the Diamond M661 sets but since I have not heard them I need some other user's experience.
For power I will be using my 8004 which will easily do 100x4@4ohm or 400x2@4ohm. I will need something that will handle a good deal of power and will get quite loud but with a tweeter that isn't too harsh.

So let's hear it and if you have any other suggestions I am listening.

The k2's would absolutely rock off that kind of power...hell, they rock off "65"WRMS on the Audison SRX3 which is more than likely putting out 80 or so RMS.

It's too bad you can't make them fit.

I've yet to hear the Diamond comps but I hear lots of great things about them especially the HEX set.

I've heard a 10 and 12" Diamond sub and they seem pretty solid. Not a Lotus 12 or Utopia, but nice nontheless.

Good luck with your search.

Although, I do believe the K2's come in a so called "slim line" that is considerably "thinner" than the regular drivers.

I helped with an install in a late 90's Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder, and we installed some of the Hex 6.5" components. They had a nice build quality to them, and sounded pretty good. The tweeter was an aluminum one, and was a bit bright for my tastes, but overall they sounded pretty decent, even off of pretty low power. Sorry I have not heard the M6 series though......

Oh and Hardwrkr, there is someone on a local board that might be selling the M661's. Will let you know when I find out, I think they might be a clear out from a shop that went under, might be a new set for a good price.

I currently own the HEX 6/4 tweet combo. I have used the M661 also and for the money I thought they were great.

My old set of 165k2's I found had more mid bass than the 661. But in detail I found them on par. The Diamond will work much better in my opinion off axis.

I would not recommend the soft dome option on the Diamond..

Diamond are great, you will like them!

I thought the Diamond was an excellent driver set, similar in sound to the Eclipse comp set. Lots of detail and air (maybe too much in some setups) a little cool overall (more oomph in the 100 to 400 Hz range would be welcome). Tough to beat at the price point (but I would also audition the JL, Morel, Dynaudio and the Image Dynamics not all are in the same price range but they all are quite good).

I haven't tested the M661 on it's own but have run the M6's in the 6/4/tweet combo and thought they were pretty decent. I did like them better when I took out their passives and went fully active on the cross overs.

The only difference in the actual mid from a HEX to an M6 that I found was the cone material... baskit and magnet structure are the same (minus a colour change in the powder coating)

Thanks for the input. I'm not limited to the price point of the M6's but my main concern is a great sounding driver that can take a load of power and still be shallow enough to go in my doors.
I would have loved to get those K2P's in but they are too deep. Utopia's are even deeper.
I'll check out the other selections by Morel, Dyn, and ID. Thanks JohnVroom.
Any opinions on Rainbow? (Not the Plat's as I don't have THAT much cash!)

On www.revscene.net the set being sold are the CM361 Diamonds, just to let you know. They are asking $270 for them.
