I have some particular experience with them...I'd like to say that overthe years I had always wondered what an AP set-up would sound like....unfortunatley the type of woofers available to use this type of set-up where un available...I had a 15" Aliante and built a very small enclosure for it using an AP pad behind it....the enclosure was the size of a cereal box...Sealed it off from the front of the car....it sounded wonderful on BASS cd tracks and really moved ALOT of air inside the cabin....but it struiggled on transients on some techno and club tracks...it performed flawlwessly on sume drum tracks....and performed like a TOM-SKIN when playing drum solo's...and it got very loud in the 90-120HZ range.....but the sound or music wasn't localized at loud volumes and it blended in very smoothly with my front stage...

I was going to buy TWO 15" and AP them both but my time and budget ran out so I had to sell it....the ALiante is a very musical woofer and with an AP pad behind it is very TRANSIENT!...

If your looking to find a way to build a smallenclosure for your trunk...don't waste your time with an AP set-up with any other sub...you'll just be doing the same thing as making a box for a woofer....most coned woofers on the market today would sound better in a FREE-AIR set-up than an AP set-up simply because their magnets are too big to save space behind the woofer...

I have one 13" JL sub 13W7 in a free-air set-up and it hit prettylow inside the cabin...and I only have about 700 WATTS going through it at any time.

Put the membrian in front of your woofer, then the depth isn't an issue. But make sure you use woofer that has a high efficiency, AP setups are pigs.

To set your AP up is pretty straight forward. You need to run an impedance curve on your woofer to find the best tunning frequency for your woofer and setup. All you need to do this is a tone gererator (or test CD) and a few resistors (10 ohm and 50 Ohm) and a volt/ohm meter. What you are trying to do is track where the impedance peak is. This helps you to determin if you need more or less material in the membrain.

My main criteria when choosing a woofer for the AP elclosure is as I said earlier, high efficiency. Not all woofers will work, but most should. It's mainly a matter of adding or removing the membrain material.

Image dynamics should have some info on their web site.

Tom-skin?....have you ever placed your ear on a tom-skin...and gave it a WHACK...what sort of sound comes from it how does it look, how does it feel?...As far as I'm concerned the Aliante was a VERY GOOD AP speaker...and it helped me fullfill my dream of having a AP set-up in my car to save space while at the same time having bass!

How about this....buy a normal sub...and install a MEMBRANE in front of it...leaving the Magnets to show in your trunk...this way...it's a free air set-up...but, you have a little more control of the woofer...maybe I might try somthing like that ...good luck.

I personally think IB is better then AP for most cases, especially if you are going to put the membrane over the woofer.......................in the cop car I had it over the woofer and it cut down output but almost 8 db.............the sq difference was minimal....................in my Toyota I had it on the back of the woofer and there was no drop in db but the sq difference was better................

The upside to IB/AP is extremely low bass...........more accurate (sq purposes) and doesn't USUALLY have any peaks assosciated with box or port designs...............you can see the basket of the subs which can make quite the statement if they are nice........

The downside is you have less output (SPL)...........you need more power to help control the woofer as the SPL goes up................

I personally believe the purpose of a membrane is to "muffle" the natural speaker sounds of a crappy woofer.............this is simply based on back to back comparisons and I prefer IB over AP..............

You need a strong woofer and a lot of power but I don't know many people that have done a proper IB set up and that went back to liking sub boxes..............

My new vehicle I can't do IB and I am choked.........

If your system is currently in your car, I would just cut off the back of your box and play with it, see if you like it.

I built a box in my camry years ago, it didn't work well so I just cut a huge hole in the back and put a 15 grill on it and it was insane..........
