Balanced amplifiers
I think old school Adcom amps had balanced line ins, and the Audison VRx has a proprietary balanced system as an option.

The Audison ABS system is really clever.
The female rca's are backward-compatible with non-balanced connectors. The male ABS connectors are in an rca form factor, with an additional concentric ring inside what is normally the signal ground. Audison makes a balanced transmitter which can be used to link an unbalanced signal to any Audison amp equipped with ABS capability. The ABS transmitter obtains +/- 15 volts from the amplifier, and allows unity gain, +3db, or +6db gain. I've also adapted the PG TBAT to run to the Audison's balanced input. Nice sounding kit, and quiet as you could want. (CMMR higher than 70db!)

Eli, the company I work for in Hong Kong was the Audison distributor from 1993-1999. I've lost track of the number of balanced systems I've installed!
Audison had a really hot, balanced pre-amp, which was introduced at the start of the ABS program. It was called the PA Line. Look it up if you can find one. Sounds more like high-end home audio, than any other high-end car audio pre-amp I've ever heard.
You've heard the saying "The Shoemaker's children go barefoot" ? That applies to me. My own car reflects my modest personal requirements.
AVI separates (MX Direct) running off an Audison LR-604XR. Head unit changes frequently. (Currently CDA-9855)
