Balanced VS. Un-balanced
#1
Okay so here is my dillema.
I have an Orion Concept 97.2 and it is capable of converting a non-balanced input into a balanced output. My Treo SSX 75.4 amp is capable of running in balanced mode also.
Now here is my problem, the EQ outputs the balanced signal via mini XLR connector and the amp can only recieve via RCA, whether the signal is balanced or unbalanced.
Now I have been doing research into this situation for almost a month in my spare time so I am fairley educated on the subject. I know I can build a cable that has the XLR on one end and standard RCA on the other. I also understand that when an RCA carries a balanced signal the center pin carries the normal phase, the outer collar carries the inverted phase of the signal while the chassis ground of the amp will serve as the ground referance. On the other hand the XLR outputs both phases of signal and the ground referance in one connector.
So if I were to build a cable that is XLR on one end and RCA on the other, what do I do with the ground referance signal from the EQ?? The EQ does not output a balanced signal via RCA only via XLR, so that is out of the question.
The other question I have is whther acheiving a balanced signal is really worth all of the hassel it will put me through??
I am willing to do it if it is worth it.
I have never heard the differance between the two so if you have experience with balanced signal please help me out.
Thanks,
Chris

I do agree the benefit of running balanced is worth it..... as my system is also balanced.

I tried both,
First, My Eclipse CD8053 via balanced RCA's at 16 volts to a Zapco C2K 2.0 amp via Symbilink.
And now, from the same deck via unbalanced at 8 volts to a JL Audio 300/2.
The result...Both signal are extremely quiet and clean. In all honesty, I was enable to hear ANY differences in term of signal quality from both amps.

Ok so correct me if I am wrong but balanced signals were developed for studios with kilometres of wiring that is often bundled dozens of runs thick right?
Car = 15feet with maybe half a dozen cable runs max. Yeah it's a noisy environment but so is anywhere with AC power.
IMO unbalanced with decent voltage is more than suitable.
