i want to hear opinions on the best 8", for the most part money no object, subwoofer that people have used, basesless opinions not needed, real world experience is required, aka, applied or heard yourself, i am looking for a true 8" subwoofer, i have used jl 8w6, solo 8"(round), xmax 8, but am looking for something a step above, this woofer has to be able to nail 30hz and play as high as 110-120hz very well and do all of this in less that .45-.5 sealed, box opinions are not needed just woofer opinions based on actual personal use, thanks

The quart 8 is awesome............I had them in my Suburban in my doors running coaxial, very tight bass from them....................I will be using them in a sealed steal enclosure in my new truck.............the old JL IB8 was also a awesome woofer.............
|

used a 8" Kicker L7 for competition a couple years ago. Routinely hit 141dbs on an AC mic. This was in a Hammerhill slot ported enclosure (retail box similar to the Rox Box).
There was a single 8" L7 in the 150+db. It's on the Kicker website under Press Releases. It was mounted in a F-Body Trans-Am. You get the benefits of a 10" (surface area of the square) but the characteristics of an 8" round sub. That sub took alot of abuse and alot of power. ie..Rockford 1000BD. If I am not mistaken it only requires a minimum of a 1/3rd of a cubic foot. .33cuft sealed and 2/3rds vented .66cuft. Mounting depth is reasonably under 5". Give one a chance but after it's been broken in. It seems so much smoother after it's broken in. |
I didn't know Dyn made a actual 8"
I know the Dyn 17w75 7" is an amazing driver...........but it's a 7" |
The best 8" I have heard was an Infinity Beta 8", from the mid 90's. .75 cubic foot box, vented, it sounded WAY bigger than it actually was......

the dyn audio is a mw170 and yes tim the cone from surround to surround it 7inches and 8 inches from outside basket edge to outside basket edge. but.... i just got the new 8 inch jbl midbass drivers and they bolt into the openings in my door perfectley and so do these old pg xs804 drivers that we have here in the stock room at the store. soooooooo, i think the dyns, althought they are a true 8inch, are techincally a 8 inch driver.

^ I am running the Dyn MW170. I like it a lot as a midbass driver it has tremendous range. It is not a good choice for subwoofer IMO (not that much excursion, needs a fair amount of box volume to go low and loud), I have eaten 2.5 (one is on the way to dumpsterland) in 2 years but I play it friggin loud with less box volume then they really want.
The Dyn does give me up front bass and is one of the better midbass drivers, but as a sub I think there might be better choices… and I don’t think it will thump or pound like you would want when showing off. The Aliante 8” ($$$$) might be OK it blends well, requires very little box volume (you could even vent it if you really wanted to... but who would want to vent any woofer...) and is a ‘fast’ driver and is designed to be a true sub, the JL-8s mentioned($) are not bad, but they do not go high at all and don’t blend as well as the other two but they can hit pretty well. I have not heard the W7-8 but it could be interesting in this application (probably too deep though) [ February 15, 2005, 04:03 PM: Message edited by: JohnVroom ] |
OZ Audio 200L
Although finding one these days may prove challenging. |
From what I've actually used and liked:
Image Dynamics 8" - very nice Rainbow mini-sub - crazy crazy 6.5" little driver I had a set of the dyn 7" many years back but never got to use them=, so can't comment. But I did own a set. [ February 15, 2005, 10:46 AM: Message edited by: dawgsbreakfast ] |
JL 8W7 - love mine, sounds like 2 12 types S. thats at 450 watts
|
8W7
Elemental Designs 8A, or 9Kv2 |
THE OZ SUBS WERE NICE BUT DONT THEY NEED LIKE A 2-3 CUB SEALED BOX?
|
Canton made an excellent 8 but it needed over a cube vented to get right down there.
I loved the output of the RE8 I have but it was too flubby on the top end over time. Believe it or not, MTX 5000 series 8 from a couple of years back. Nice little woofer. But my favorite that I have tried or own is the MTX 5500 8. How it would work in that tiny sealed box though I cannot comment. |
WHAT ABOUT A BLACK GOLD 8?COME ON DAVE YOU KNOW YOU LOVE THEM!
|
^ Please don't post in 'ALL CAPS'. It's very distracting. Thanks.

the black gold 8" is very cool but hard to find, i have 2 12" black gold subwoofers that you will have to pry from my cold dead hands
|
|
Peter at maximum threshold has an RE RE series 8" in a TL box.... crazy, crazy, freakin insane extension, and decent sound Q below 50 Hz LOL. above that, it was pretty mushy, but that's because the TL was tuned to the sub's FS of 23 Hz.

It's not a monster for sure but has it's applications. I have a single ported re8 in my gf old accord, it works very well. [ February 22, 2005, 05:38 PM: Message edited by: Fever ] |

How about the Tang-Band 8"? Very imperssive little driver on paper...
http://www.tb-speaker.com/detail/1208_03/w8-740c.htm Or it's close relative, the MCM 55-2421... http://mcm.newark.com/NewarkWebComme...KU=55-2421&N=4 Sorry, haven't heard either, but as soon as I get my hands on the 55-2421 and throw it in a box I'll elaborate further. |
For SPL kicker 8 L7 Very loud sub, very deep bass,
for sound Quality I would choose JL W7 8. Found it very clear. Both subs are very good but remember its what sub(S) you like and want. Just my personal 2 cents |
Pair of MTX BG8's here for cheap
