I know this is subjective. But I'm curious what you gentlemen that gear your gear towards sound quality would consider your minimum sub and amp setup in order to achieve the quality bass you're after.

I'm thinking that quality bass is easier, and less expensive, to come by than SPL geared gear.

I'm thinking that a single 10" Alpine Type E in a proper ported enclosure would fit the bill for my fiancee. Ported to get a little deeper.

She tends to listen to dance, reggae, hip hop, pop (adult)...

Dave Matthews Band, Big Sugar, Sean Paul, Sean Kingston, Britney Spears (WTF???), Teagan & Sara, Lilly Allen, amongst others. She likes her bass.

But over her 08 Accent's stock setup, anything would be an upgrade.

I'm just curious what you guys tend to find sufficient.

Have you tried the type-e? it hardly puts out any bass, especially with the 10". when you go 10", you'd need at least 2 to get sufficient bass.

Look for the type-r, they can be found for cheap if you search carefully and be patient. alternatively, look at infinity kappas.

for SQ it's about system balance, sub is about the least important thing in SQ.
pretty much any sub that plays cleanly will do.

I run a JBL w15gti, on 1100 watts (IB) lowpassed at 36hz@12db/
some competitors have kickass 8's as midbass and use no subs.

If its for music, without getting hardcore about SQ, just build a decent box for that 10 and give it clean power. Odds are that your fiancee doesn't need to kick butt at comps and will be satisfied with a bit more bottom end and she won't be too picky about the overall detail and sound quality.

for your GF, any decent brand sub will do the job in the right enclosure. Most women are into nice, balanced sound, not ball busting , shake your guts loose bass. Your Type E will probably more than satisfy her in conjunction with good full range speaks. I think as a group, we tend to forget that average consumers and music listeners don't want a car full of electronics or speakers...they just want clean, clear, balanced sound. Staging, imaging, and most other "high end" aspirations are really for enthusiasts, and audiophiles. The average Jane or Joe really could care less, and most wouldn't know the difference if they heard it. I can tell you that every woman that has ever been in my car or living room has reacted exactly the same way to my stereo systems..."wow! that's cool...nice stereo....it's a little loud, can you turn it down a bit...no a bit more...ok, I like to hear myself think!" That's why i like to drive by myself!!!

We've decided on the Hertz HSK 165's, for the time being anyway. As for the amplifier, I plan on getting her a decent 4 channel amp. Though it might be less expensive to get a smaller 2 channel, and a dedicated Class D mono. I'm just not certain if the installation of the two amps would bring me back to the same price, or if we'd notice any real improvement in bass response by using a two amp setup anyway.
So far, the 4 ch. amps I'm looking into are the Pioneer Premier PRS-D4200F, Alpine MRP-F600, Clarion APX4361, or the Audison SRX3 (three channel). I haven't been able to find a price of the Audison, through the Internet, that best reflects what I'd expect to pay in the 'real' world. But I'm sure that it would be substantially more coin than the other 3.

Regardless, I'm looking at about 300W for the subwoofer we choose - that would be a sufficient supply for a 10" Type S as well.

The 4channel will be cheaper overall. You require less accessories to hook it up, less labour, and for the power range you are in, the 4channel makes the most sense...easy, clean, and will sound as good as separate amps. Those new Pioneer amps are a nice little package...75x2 + 1 x 300...perfect, small, efficient, and inexpensive (relatively speaking). I've owned a few over the years and i've loved them for their simplicity and reliability.

Right on. Thanks Veeman. I think this amps are so close in terms of specifications that we'd end up being happy with any of them. I'm partial to the Alpine brand. But if we can get the Clarion, or Premier, for less, that'll be most likely what we'll do.

The shop I've been dealing with wants me to come in on a Friday afternoon, when I'm free, so we can hook up a 4 channel in that configuration. I have to hear what 300W sounds like on an inexpensive 10" sub. Maybe it won't be enough. I'm trying to keep my own tastes out of the equation. But that's a lot easier said, than done.
