Compression ID horns and SQ?

I was jsut wondering how many people out there have dabbled with horns for SQ? I heard some horns (wave guides usd) aound 10 years ago and they were awesome but when i've asked my local stereo shop they just tell me its old technology and they are junk. I personally have never heard a better sounding stereo in a car then was in that truck, are the new usd, Image Dynamics horns really junk? I know they are harder to tune right but i thought they were still better tehn a regular component set if they were paired up with a nice mid.

given that you'll have 1 source for everything from 300-20khz it can in theory be a good thing. But mounting them in a such a location where you'd have a good sound stage and such just is not in the slightest bit practical in a vehicle.

Much like communism, horns work in theory.

The worst thing about running horns is mounting them in a car. If you get em in, they can be fantastic. Sure, other methods can have great SQ too, but I have yet to hear conventional drivers have that same dynamic edge that horns give.

A very successful SQ competitor in BC, and on this site in fact, uses USD guides as part of his front end. I have a pair of NIB USD 7.0s going into the Hearse if I ever get off my *** and complete it (they 'just' fit)

I would be concerned with your shop's "if we dont sell it it isn't worth having" attitude it leads me to believe they do not have your best interest at heart they have their cash flows' best interest at heart... Just because it isn't vogue doesn't mean it isn't worth having

OK I dont think I would let them talk me out of it if it was "the best"... I would look for an ID dealer eh!

I think have heard one or two setups that completely removed the tonal issues of automotive horns (VERY hard to tune) and they dont fit so good in cars either so the shop that installs it must be experienced with horns (I bet your shop cant do it)

You also need to consider the vehicle they are going into. They are fantastic in vehicles that have little or no centre console. Some of the best sounding cars with horn that i have heard were in cars built in the 80's-90's. Like..

Buick Grand National
Monte Carlo SS
Chev Mailibu
etc.

If you're going to be looking at horns, stay away from the cheapies (piezo drivers).

I'm currently using the Veritas HLCD's in my truck right now, took a lot of work to get them in, but it was worth every minute. I also have the full size Image Dynamics horns which I might give a try sometime. I don't think I will ever go back to a conventional component set.

be very very carefull if you are going to be using them... like john vroom said... they can get you into a whole heap of aqustical trouble if they are tuned and installed wrong, but in the hands of a qualifed future shop install crew will sound fantabulous..... p.s. yes that was a shameless plug for our store! so sue me............. GO RIDERS!!!!
