Doozy Pt. 2 - the whine strikes...again dammit (56k pic warning)
Right now, I have grounds from the two amps plus capacitor to a ground block via 4 gauge, then a 6-7 foot run of 2 gauge to the main battery chassis ground. Then I have a short run of 2 gauge from the chassis ground to the battery PLUS the existing run of 8 gauge that was stock on the car. It's just a lot of freaking ground wires.
You still have whine?
Add some more wire in there!
Here's a suggestion:
Ground the amp to the chassis, ground the deck to the chassis, connect the deck to the amp with the shortest RCA you can stretch across the seats, then connect a test speaker (no crossovers) to the amp.
Have noise? No? Good!!!
Now start going back to your original install, one thing at a time, until the noise reappears.
Voila!

Oh trust me, we've been through all that. Grounding plugs, however, show the whine is before the amps. That's what led me to get the HU checked, re-do all the wiring to the amps, plus the HU ground. Didn't really occur to me to think about the power to the HU!
How about the gauge of your amp power wires? Does that matter?
LOL
had to
what to do
new power to the deck and amps
new neg to the amps and deck
test the rac's or replace them
try moving the neg's
thing's you have done are
test amp
new rca's
looked at the deck
had a beer and got pissed off about this f-ing wine
then looked at it abit more
so where are you with it now ?
The power supply issue is unique to E36 BMW models.

New power was done to the amps, new neg done to the deck and amps, tested and replaced RCA's, moved the neg for the amps and deck. No result. Also exchanged 4 channel amp for a new one and tested the alternator. Still no result.
I have yet to try the new power supply but from what I've seen this is the best solution other E36 owners have been able to come up with. I'm currently working 50 hour weeks at the office and then saturdays at the shop, so I have zero downtime to get things done anyways. Look for an update near the end of March sometime once car starter season starts to wind down.
