I love the Be

The TN52 is also an amazing tweet, superior to the TN51. If you ever see the difference between the 2 on an RTA it's pretty amazing. The TN52 is pretty flat but low, the TN51 is also quite flat but does have some peaks that you don't see on the TN52 and the 51 is also brighter but not by too much.....in fact the untrained ear might not even hear the difference but it is there.

WOW

Brandon... seems like your a Focal man, pardon for not bowing and scraping at it very mention. ;-)

Brandon try to be objective too. I don’t think I said a single thing to discourage a Focal purchase. I am one of the VERY FEW to have heard the TLR in a car audio SQ rig and it was a special event. Sorry but when you have a product with a buttocks shaped horn/diffuser, that is oblong in shape and can not be trimmed to a size more conducive to the automotive environment, runs at 6 ohms, has 96 dB efficiency, and costs more than most comp sets you have to take your lumps and your kudos. The hard part comes when you have to separate yourself from the 500 USD to get it. My recommendation is to simply go out and do a comparison listen to the peerless, the scan speak, the Dynaudio esotar (which is even bigger), the various and sundry planers, horns, and ribbons. The focals (tweets and mid-bass) will do very well in any form of component to component competition and personal preference will come to play as to whether or not you buy them.

The TLR really stands out in its ability to handle power (150 watts), its frequency range 2.5k to 25k, and it’ level of detail retrieval. Again it comes down to size and price, the smaller Focal might be the smarter purchase.

I don’t think anyone who ever bought Focal felt cheated, they got about what they paid for and with top notch QC the purchase is likely to be around for several years. I think they are a top notch company also but they are not the only game in town, and they know it. I have heard musically convincing systems with MBQ, Focal, Dynaudio, Scan Speak, Panasonic and numerous others (I got tired of name dropping). Buy wisely and comparison shop so you don’t look back and second guess your purchase.

I don't mean to sound like a Focal ****, but I just hate seeing people put them down because they have a rather high price tag.

It's like they say, you get what you pay for.

As for when Focal has bent over backwards for thier competitors...I know ALOT of people that would agree. But like anything, you have to earn it....don't expect to put a set of polyglass in your car with a poor install and expect Focal to just rush over and start hooking you up with top of the line gear.

I've heard the TLR, along with a 6W mid (is that the 'Audiom'? Sorry but I'm not a Focal-fanatic so I don't know all the models and terms for them) in a very well tuned system that utilized excellent audio equipment along with some very fancy testing/tuning equipment pretty much no shops outside of a laboratory would have. The midbass and subs were non-Focal so I don't know how much that ruins the credibility of the system but the sound was indeed beautiful. And yes I would concede that speakers, installation and tuning is what makes 90% of the sound of a car. The sound in the car was big, relaxed, and effortless. I very much liked it but that's also how I like a car to sound. Could a similar sound be made with 'inferior' speakers with the same amount of effort, skill and equipment? Possibly, but a quality product always makes it easier I'm sure.

As for the competition scene, a conspiracy theorist could summise that if one product is immensly popular in the lanes, then the judges, who come from industry, would likely also be exposed to it and would have an opinion formed of it. Quite possibly it could be of the mainstream, that being the product 'must' be good since everybody else likes it and say it sounds great. Peer influence has a MASSIVE impact on subjective topics like audio. Think about it, nobody else knows how another person hears something. So how does it come to be that something sounds good? More than one person AGREES with at least another that it sounds good to them. So its all again opinion and influence. Anyway, enough of that.

Products that have time invested into them cost more money. Its about as simple as that.

Very good statment...I remember a story from finals a few years ago where a judge said to a competitor"I love the sound of the focal mids and they all score 10/10 with me"little did he know it was focal grills with made in China pieces of crap behind them.Image is alot....but for my off axis a-pillar I love the TN-52.

Focal is a very good speaker in most applications. They are one of the few companies that is truly technology driven. There is technology in their car products that can be seen in their home range of loudspeakers that tops out at $120,000.00 CDN.

As I have said before, the French know Hi-Fi!
