Buyer beware online? What exactly are you referring to? Do you not buy anything off of ebay? Just curious. Ofcourse you have to be aware of buying stuff online, but your comment sounded as if you are very much against it.
Correct me if I am wrong.

^All good advice and should be looked into (though I like passive based systems a little more than Dukk, I like the flexibility active gives).

You seem very sold on up market products and on Focal in particular (and they are good and their new stuff is better in some ways than the stuff on eBay) but there are other brands out there that excel. My advice is to listen to as many different drivers as possible and see which one sounds best to you AND which one meets the scoring criteria of the local SQ show you want to compete in. DLS, Dynaudio, Canton, JL, Seas, Scan Speak, Eclipse, Genesis, Image Dynamics, Morel, Usher: is a partial list off the top of my head of good sounding drivers that appear to do what you want (they have good sound, they are up-market, and they do well in the SQ circuit). The active system is a little complicated but worth it for most serious competitors, it gives you REAL control

But you know an inexpensive coax placed perfectly with cheep electronics has whipped more than a few upscale competitors so please get the installation right

Thanks for the advice!

Actually I am not necessarily sold on up-market and Focal speakers in particular even if it appears so.

Consider this - I cannot afford to buy lots of different speakers and "try" each one to figure out the best one. Time and money constraints are the limiting factors.

So, the next best thing is just to buy what is "considered" good by folk who compete and win SQ competitions. Of course as you pointed out, even cheap components can sound amazing if installed right. Realistically, I would ideally like to get good quality speakers that sound amazing at a good price - hence I was looking at used Focal speakers on ebay. If I were to buy brand new Focal speakers from a local retailer, I can tell you right now it will probably take another 2 years to buy all the speakers I need. Unfortunately other priorities like paying my mortgage come first.

Another alternative route is to buy other very good brands like the ones you mentioned brand new and hopefully they will be more affordable and I can do the install sooner.

Bottom line - good speakers (good enough to place well in a SQ comp) at a price that does not break the bank is my criteria. That's it! It sounds simple, but obviously isn't.......

When I say place well in an SQ comp, at the end of the day, placing well in an SQ means that the system will sound amazing - that is what I am after.

I wanted to also mention that I have the Pioneer Premier P9 combo, so active control is definitely the route I am taking.

Also, which particular model of Image Dynamics should I get. Not referring to subs here, but the front components.
