Have $1000 to increase SQ...guidance?

I'm curious what your crossover points are? Where is your LP set for the sub, HP and LP for the mids, and HP for the tweets? What slopes?
I found with my K2Ps powered passive with 150 RMS/ch I had to activate a HP at 75 Hz, 12 dB/oct in order to protect them from distorting at volume. They lose their clarity if you don't roll them off (or activate the HP on the passive crossover). I assume this loss of clarity is distortion as I don't have an oscilloscope.
Then, the sub had to come up to 75 Hz, 24 dB/octave to get me the kick I wanted. Sub volume can only be about 6 dB higher than the mids in order for it not to sound weird but keep sub bass at speed. Note to self - dynamat trunk to remove road noise.
Let us know where your crossover point are. If there's a gap between the sub and the natural rolloff of the Focal mids, you'll feel just like I did - these Focals don't kick. Your sub might need to do a bit more work.
