Hi all,

I need to run a 1/0 cable from my battery to the trunk, and since my car doesn't have any unused holes in the firewall, it looks like I'll have to drill one.

So does anyone have any ideas on what a good way to do this would be? What did you guys do to make the hole air/water tight and to make sure the cable is protected from being cut? Any tips on a good location to choose?

Or is it maybe worth it to go to a shop for this part of the installation?

First of all, I apologize, I posted this by mistake. I meant to post it in the "Install Related" section. If an admin could move this, that would be great.

The vehicle is a 1998 Dodge Neon, but I was looking mostly for generic advice (i.e. how to make an watertight seal around the cable, how to prevent rust forming at the hole cut out, is it better to cut near the top of the firewall or down lower, etc...).

Thanks,
molo

if your lazy and want to be ghetto, measure the diameter of the wire and drill a hole that big under the dash on the drivrs side somewhere around the hood release.

put the wire through and make sure the length on both sides is good.. then use alot of outdoor silicone around it on both sides and call it a day.

I'm and SPL guy and all and I'm likey going to get a lot of negitive feedback but oh well...

Could you not run the cable under the car along a frame rail,in a frame rail or along pinchweld?

It strikes me I've seen SQ guys do that before and it normally turns out pretty good..

Just my thoughts...

I would try to drill a hole using a Unibit (aka Step bit) and then use a rubber grommet. Once it is run through the grommet, sillicone around any gaps.

Sorry Dave but I have to mention this....all the outdoor silicone in the world will not guard against a short if the wire is pinched....just normal wear & tear will cause the metal to eventually cut through the wire jacket with a wire this heavy, unless you use the proper grommet.

Best to install a heavy duty, two-piece screw together type grommet made for just this application...and don't forget to fuse as close to the battery as possible... Most pursuasive reason is in case of an accident if you happen to be pinned into the car or unconcious you don't want a big wire like the one you got shorting out and starting a fire.

So then.. where do you guys find a grommet that fits 1/0?

I've done a bit of checking and have never been able to find any.
