How much power?
#21
Just because you have an independant amp channel running each driver the total output is not the sum of the wattage of all drivers.
I'm running a biamp setup with my 3ways. The woofer gets 50W and the mid-tweet combo gets 50W. That doesn't mean that I have 100W in total (on the one side). I'm still getting only 50W on either side. Remember that in an active setup, the power given to each driver only is a part of the frequency spectrum. Since there is very little overlap (at the crossover points), the power used cannot be added as some of you have done...
Eg
Midbass 2x50
Midrange 2x50
Tweeter 2x50
Total Power - 2x50W not 2x150W
I think a more important issue would be the required power in an active vs. passive setup. I could opt to run both amps in mono and use one for the left side and one for the right side. Instead of getting 2x50W, it would be 1x200W (RS) + 1x200W (LS)....

Just read this thread now, after posting on Dukk's new thread. I agree with mqqball and posted as such.
While not a DIRECT comparison, I can offer this. I have a Concept 75x2 in my Daytona running the 3-way front stage (using passives of course) and another 75x2 running my sub. I have lots of power for SQ listening and can muster almost 140 dB if I need to. In my Avenger, I had almost the exact same 3-way front stage but all active and had around 400 watts RMS to the front stage divided up through 6 channels of amplification. The volume and impact of the two different systems was very similar. This makes sense because the power each speaker received in both systems was very similar. Just food for thought.

I am running a two way front end actively x-over with 65x4. Mind you, the amp was tested not too long ago that the output was something like 102x4. That raised my eyebrows. But since I did not witness the test or actually do it myself, I am skeptical as to the results, as much as it would be nice to believe.
I'm no amp guru, so I have no comments at this time that will impress anyone All I know is that I like my amplifier to be transparent and not add anything to the signal path garbage wise. It's all about accurate reporduction for me baby !!!!

Hey Tom - would you mind performing an experiment?
I don't know how hard it would be but would it be possible to take your biamped front end, double bridge that amp to 2channels, hook up the passives at the amp, and give it a listen? Same system, same amp, theoretically 3x to 4x the power to the comps though.
I know you run a P9 and if it is gonna be a biotch with xover settings to kill the mid out lowpass then don't bother but it would be interesting to hear the results and your system seems it may be easy to try
