Each sanctioning body is different, with some more different than others. But there is a common thread, they all use the human ear as a tool to evaluate. The amount of subjective scoring will either be the entire SQ score sheet or a portion of the scoring. Take a look at each groups SQ score sheet and count the points and that tells you what they think is important.
The big 3 in North America is : USACi, IASCA, and MECA. Since MECA is not in Canada (not because we dont want to be, we just dont have a guy/ gal to put on shows in Canada) you can pick and choose from the other two fine organizations, both have diverse programs. There are smaller sanctioning groups trying to put on multiple SQ events as well and I am sure there are some with real value and others of dubious value.
Now to answer the question... we use a CD we are very familiar with, we (the judges) go through special training and there are other things we do as well to keep the ear 'calibrated'. I keep myself calibrated by going to about 15 to 20 live acoustical musical events per year (symphony, opera, Jazz, Celtic, Bluegrass, etc.). I read and I try to learn new things on acoustics as well.

iasca has reduced the judging to mastering one song and the safety of your install. over time you will get a consistant opinion on your setup as well as making friends and hearing thier setup. your vehicle is the problem not the setup in most cases.

well with usaci if you know the judges you win and same with iasca, after competing frquently,i have found this very very true overthe past three yrs.... soooooooo get in good with the "in" crowd and as long as your system is ok you should win! sorry i call them as i see em. friends always want friends to win... sucks, but thats the way its been for a while now and i really dont see it changing any time soon.... as soon as the judges are unbiased as to who is competing then things will be alot fairer... Tims shows, when he did them, he called in judges from seattle who new absolutly no one so they judged accordingly... thats how it should be done. i dont know you... you dont know me ,lets let the car win or loose the show. blah blah blah blah blah... sorry iam ranting i am better now.... i guess when the judges read this post that will mean i will never win a sound off again...... oh unless i show the judges that i use focal equipment!!!!!!!!!!!
