IB classifications
After reading other posts about ISOBARIC enclosures - I've come to he realization that there are different types! Can someone classify them or clarify?
Cheers Ju |
Isobaric is simply two woofers either face to face or one in front of each other wired togther. Biggest advantage is your enclosure is half the standard size. But you will only have the output of a single woofer. There aren't may applications that I would suggest using this arrangement though. Todays subs work in small cabinets on their own and I can't justify the extra cash needed.

What about IB in kick panels? btw I'll take you up on you offer once I get the car done! Hmm when you're thinking um that depends on when Rockford get the next batch of 3sixty.2's built! BEH!
|
another major benefit of isobaric is having two motors, suspensions, surrounds etc working together to control the woofer and keep it linear under high excursion circumstances

I've been reading people creating kickpanels with IB configurations! If I'm mistaken do they mean ISOBARIC?? if not what is IB?
|
Isobaric = alignment better suited in the old days when a smaller enclosure was needed but power and control needed to be kept.
Infinite Baffle = a "wall" that completely separates the front of the driver from the back..the baffle is "infinitely" huge...no enclosure, aka free-air (not completely accurate) |
Thank MTT that's what I was looking for! Cheers

IB is popular with subs and midbass in SQ cars. You need to choose the right speakers though.

an ib kick pod is where you do something like cut into the hot/cold air lines

if the air space is cut into the vent the pod space is not a small airspace is it ?
|
I think you mean cutting holes in you crush panel area. Like behind a kick panel. I did this in my car.

or does it act as a horn and you just time delay it a little? |
Ok so now we have all the techy info out of the way! My midbass drivers are the K2P Bass extension kit 6.5" drivers. Currently they are housed in a sealed enclosure in the kicks. I have to use 1/2 a pound of pillow stuffing to stop the kick from resonating!
If I cut the back section out to change the enclosure to IB what size hole and are there any factors that need to be address "Fozz: I spoke with Focal America and they said the 165KBE's will work in a IB application!" Ju |
the horn thing might .......
i just got up so hold on .... i thing with not having sleep that because the air vent goes to more then one place like to the outside of car and to the dash .the wave does not go into a horn wave |
morning,i too am looking for midbass improvement, maybe try aperiodic before you start cutting holes in your crush panels.might be a cheap solution(scanspeak flow restrictors@solen)thanks to fozz.

Here is a photo of my kicks. You can see the hole behind the midbass driver. I would say the bigger the hole the better. If you can make it as large as the cone on the driver your using your golden. I don't have a hole cut that large, but my midbass still works well. My kicks are bolted to the car, and I have about a few lbs of clay in and around them to add more mass. There photo are show my preliminary trials for the holes. I ended up making them a little bigger, cleaned up the edges and added sound deadening.
