I just learned about this product. It uses a patented psychoacoustics signal processing algorithm to make your speakers sound like they play more then an octave lower, without increasing peak power or speaker excursion.
I just started playing one with great skeptisism and it has impressed me.............it really does make the bass sound better and more realistic...................at first I thought "oh great, another Epicenter/basscube"............but it actually works.................. For more info check out the home page for the product............. EDIT ***We got the one in the show room hooked up, WOW..............it's nice.............haven't tried it on mids yet, but I can see it making a difference cause when you click the mid switch the sub sound like a tighter midbass. Any one want to check it out, come on by *** Maxx Bass http://www./misc/images/P1010418.JPG [ August 09, 2005, 04:23 PM: Message edited by: Tim Baillie. ] |
Sounds like they're playing with harmonics and phase to simulate the low notes....they don't really get into specifics, but if harmonics can be generated from fundamental notes, why not go backwards and add some waves together to produce lower sine waves.
well I'm very intrested... but how much does it cost?
Can I be a beta tester for the one you have?
It makes the listener believe they are hearing notes that are physically not there = that's what psychoacoustics mean, right?
So what it sounds like (no pun intended) is they combine the two door speakers to work with the subwoofer or with each other to create new waves from ones that physically come out of the speakers? Also, because this is all in your head, I assume it will not show up on let's say an RTA? |
So...you can use it either for door speakers OR a subwoofer???
I found my own answer...you can use it for either...reviews on the web site seem to indicate that it does more for satellites than it does for subs...would love to hear one.
Hmmm I wonder if it would make my kick-panel mounted 7" midbass sound more like a 10" sub?

Doan, PM me for more details

Tim, does this doohickey: 1. Appear to even out bass response, 2. Emphasize certain frequencies, 3. Increase authority, or 4. Improve transience response. This does seem like a very interesting product
It does a little of everything.
will belive it when i hear it, but am not quite ready to discount it just yet
Every review of it has been sceptical from the start, and ends with the reviewer as a believer.

That "idea" of bass enhancing has been around for years. If was done by PPI roughly 3 years ago but the patient expired and these guys picked it up...it works great for 6.5 in doors, but not the components. It created funny humps at the higher fzs when I used it. But it makes 6x9s sound like a million bucks!

I hope no one has a problem with this thread as advertising. I am very happy to have Tim bring this product to my attention...otherwise, I might not have known about it for some time. I am going out to buy one tomorrow to try it out (and no, I am not getting it from Tim). I will report back on my findings.
Thanks again, Tim. Lawrence. |
HOw much Tim? I want one!
No problem from me with Tim showing this item like this at all.
Anyone that wants more info needs to PM me otherwise that would be considered advertising

I read a review on this system that Eric Holdaway did a while back in CA&E, he was pretty impressd with it.

John, if you remember the car behind me and diagonal (Jamie Glover's car) at finals. It had the maxx bass prototype unit of that in it. Tim is right it actually does work. Defro I'm pretty sure you trust my opinion to the fact that it does what it claims. I played with his car for about 45 mins fiddling with it on and off and not only does it draw the stage forward on a rear bass heavy vehicle but as tim said it does it with no extra excursion. What was a pain was getting it to image properly once it was up there. It made vocals really bleed a bit wider than I would like but this again was with his install so I never got to play with it in my car
I got a chance to hear the demo car (Nir Paz, the Morel guy now works for Waves came by). Waves owns the technology, makes lots of pro audio stuff. This technology was a no brainer for car (its used in computer speakers and stuff like that where getting good bass is tough).
It worked great to my ears, seems to be worth the price of admission. Juan Originally posted by Westec: That "idea" of bass enhancing has been around for years. Was there not some similar processor setup like this in Wayne Harris' Terminator?
[snip]"The synthesizer is necessary for this system because of the ability of the subwoofers to reproduce extremely low frequencies," Harris said. "Most recordings, even on CDs, have very little program information below 50Hz. Since there is nothing there, an EQ can't boost it. The synthesizer takes all program material from 55 to 100 Hz and recreates this information one octave lower."[/snip] [ July 08, 2005, 07:09 AM: Message edited by: Meep ] |
^ That's pretty much what an Epicenter does. This product reportedly does things different.
Increasing low end extension without increasing driver displacement is intriguing..
^ NO kidding... so how does that all work.. thats really neat.
Tried this thing out briefly last night...very interesting...certainly added some nice bass to the front listening area...would have to play with it more to really get a good sense of its capabilities...
Played with it anymore ?
Well, if you are in the neighbourhood, Timmy has one hooked up in his shop......... Tim, do you have a demo we can temporarily hook up in our cars?
Not yet, but I will soon..........
