Just out of curiosity and to test my hearing ability, i decided to mix the same track (at 112 kbps and lossless. The idea was to instantaneously switch back and forth between them so that i may have the best chance to hear the audible differences. I used a digital mixer, and all gains, eq's, etc. Were set flat, the tracks were perfectly synchronized, and the mixer allows for perfect switching with absolutely no noise in between. The 112 kbps track was ripped from the same lossless track to minimize any issues of source to source differences. The track is from Alpines speed of sound test cd.."how deep does it go".

Results: I can not tell its two separate tracks playing...even with very good head phones (sennheiser hd 650 and denon AHD 2000 ) late at night in my bed! I'd love to email the mixed track to anyone that want to listen and would love to know if they can hear the difference. I have documented the times at which i switched the tracks, so if you listen and can specify approximately the time the tracks changed...i'd be impressed!

Now based on this, i tried 96 kbps...noticeable but still very good and i doubt that i could hear it in a moving car, 64 kbps...noticeable immediately, and 32 kbps...bad.

i also want to hear, I would host it online somewhere for us to download, I know in the past I could hear the difference between 128-256-320 85% of the time, that took a lot of concentration and some nice cans as well. I notice the largest difference is im how high and low the recordings go is where I could hear the difference. VBR (variable bit rate) makes it more difficult I have a lot of my music encoded in that and you get a mix of the quality and small file size.

 

Love to...have to figure out how to post it or email it...it's in wav format..50 mb(recorded in .wav to preserve all info). Pm your emails and i'll figure out how to send it...may be i can just send a 10mb sample with the most switches in it??

I'll look into that this evening when i get back. I'm curious to know whether i'm starting to go deaf or not..lol..as i expected to hear a clear difference. I haven't even had a chance to test it on other people yet.

 

try listening to some high frequency tones to see if you you can hear 17khz+ (I know I can barely hear up to about 21Khz)

 

21 khz...that's better than a baby. My 41 year old ears were tested a few years ago...good to 17,500 khz. It'll be interesting to see who can tell when the changes occur in the track though. I have no doubt that some of the members should be able to tell.

 

i seem to hear the difference between 128 and 320. the highs are " damaged " kinda. sounds harsh after that. and 320 its allright. but even then it doesnt beat a good cd...
