mp3 sucks, the closest to cd quality is 1440 or something really freaken high.

WMA is actually pretty horrible at reproducing accurate sounds.
CBR at 256 or 320 is great, but VBR at 224 is a nice medium.
If you had support for MP3Pro that would be best, a VBR Mp3Pro at high bitrates, but you wont get CD Qualityy 1440.

I only use mp3s for my ipod, and I find that the best balance between file-size and sound quality is 190 VBR. still a reasonable size, and it doesn't sound like complete crap. 190+ and the size becomes gigantic. The words "audiophile" and "mp3" do not go together though imo.

I put mp3 cds in my changer - so I have like 100 albums on hand at all times in case I forget my CD case. Anyone else borrowing the car has access to that library of mp3's as well and they seem happy with it. I own maybe 500 real CD's so I rotate 25 at a time into my portable case and use these solely in the HU(btw I have an 835mp also). Very noticeable difference in SQ: real CD <-> mp3 .

use a program called EAC to extract original tracks from CD.
use a program called lame to make the mp3s.
