My sound sucks! Should I start from scratch?
MY car is a 1996 sunfire. In it I have a Sony (XMZR704) 4 channel amp, Sony (XMGTR6001) monoblock sub amp, Two sets of Alpine (SPR17S) Type-R 6-1/2" components, Two Infinity Perfect 10 VQ Subs, a Sony (CDXGT240) deck, zero guage power and ground wires to a red top battery in the trunk, from there it's zero guage to a fused distribution block with 4 guage outputs to the amps. I have made side baffles in the back seat and mounted one set of components there. I have a set of door pods made and am running the other components up front. My subs are in a moulded box dropped down in the spare tire cavity and in the left over space from the spare tire I have my amps, battery and power distribution mounted there.
My sound sucks. My tweeters are way too bright and tinny and dynamat to my doors and panels didn't help at all either. My mids are great but my subs are not smooth at all, they aren't covering the higher bass very well at all. I pulled the Q core out completely and still had crazy low base. I switched my subs with the Fosgate Power series 10" dual 4's and it got worse.
Any suggestions?

By moulded box, I'm assuming that you mean a sealed box. Make sure you don't have a Low Pass Filter turned on your Xplod amp.
If you have a ported box, a spare tire well will not be adequate for two, let alone one sub. Adjusting your tweeters with your head unit might help toning them down.
And yes, pics would help a LOT.

My sound is sounding much better now. I have switched the inner core from the low Q to the mid Q on my subs. That made a huge difference. My subs like less than .03cuft for the low Q and .05cuft to .07cuft for the mid Q. Somehow I must have miscalculated my enclosure size by subtracting the sub displacement twice. I have also switched the front amp to a JL Audio HD600/4 and the rear sub amp to a JL Audio Slash V2 1000watt monoblock. The bigest problem seems that the front amp gain wasn't matching up with the sub amp gain. ( Not even close! ) Now the sound is nice and smooth all the way through. It's now just a matter of tweeking the sound to what I like to hear. My tweets are still a little bright but it seems that the better quality amp has smoothed that out quite a bit already. I'm getting a digital camera for Xmas and will post some pix in the new year.
Thanks everyone. I'll be keeping in touch the rest of the way through the build. For the next phase I will be sculpting the whole interior of the car this spring.

I'm not too impressed with the Alpine Type R 6 1/2" components. I'm thinking the tweeter is way too bright for my likeing. Does anyone out there know a really high quality component set with not so much ear pearcing highs. I was also wondering if anyone knows about the Focal Utopia line and if they are any better?

You sure you can afford the Focal Utopia?
Other than that, there's always Hybrid Audio, Morel, lower end Focal (K2, Polyglass), and Alpine's better component line up is better. If you think that the tweeter is too bright for your liking, Use the EQ or the crossover on the amp to adjust to your liking, but I'm not sure how much of an impact you're going to hear, because of the passive crossover.

I'm not as concerned about price as I am about the sound quality. I was hopeing to get the sound that I want with all my eq's running flat. That way it's just a quick adjustment on each song that I listen to.
Was curiouse about the focal line since a friend of mine suggested it. He owns a car stereo shop in Cranbrook B.C. and claims that he can run anything he wants and that is what he is running in his car. ( unfortunately he doesn't sell that lineup of products.)

thats a HUGE jump in quality and price from type r's to utopia. you will be paying thousands for those speakers.
from my experience focals tend to have bright tweeters as well however.
look into hertz, morel, or even hybrid.
personally i'd recommend MLK-165 if you don't care about price. very laid back tweeters, amazing woofers.
...but then you are going to have little sony amps on $1000 speakers...even more if you pick up some top end focal.
