The CDA 9887 is at my local brick and mortar for $499 which seems kind of high, I guess I'll keep looking for the $400 mark.

What's really got me jazzed about this unit is the 24 bit Burr-Brown dac. It's the same dac that came in my denon ht receiver. This would be a major upgrade from my current HU, which has a 1 bit dac, a Sony MEX 1GP. I can really notice that mp3s are much less dynamic than old school uncompressed files, or is that a separate issue?

Anyway, soon it will be mine all mine!(insert evil diabolical laugh ending with a hacking cough here)

Thats a very nice bright set. I am still leaning towards an Alpine. I have heard an Alpine 7995 with that set, and the sound is incredible for hip hop, reggaeton, electronic. Not sure about other types of music, as I didn't hear it on that combo.

I was a loyal Alpine follower, but after being disappointed on my last 2 decks( which were both insurance replacements) I went for anything but Alpine and ended up with the Sony I mentioned. But I've never been able to achieve the SQ I had with the last Alpine HU/crossover combo that I was happy with, and am willing to give them another try. This time I will take my time and put the 7887 through its paces before I decide.

I've got Focal 130V2s and a PPI DCX 600.4, so I should be able to get pretty decent sound. I'd look into Eclipse more, but they don't have much of a presence where I live, and I'm not going to buy it without trying it out.

It's odd, but I've searched high and low and am pretty sure the old Alpine I had was only a 1 bit dac, and yet that unit truly had excellent sound. I don't know why at least some of their stuff is so pedestrian these days.

I like Alpine and I've never had a problem with their HUs.

The Eclipse is a nice sounding deck but they are expensive and I'm not to sure about the build quality.

I am sure about the build quality and will show you any and all warranty issues should you want to know. I have yet to have a failure in the CD5100 and CD7100 this year for that matter. I have had one failure in a CD3100 and it proved to be bad out of the box. No failures on the CD2000 or CD1000 this year as well.

Most of the Eclipse units that have come back for service have been locked units from people who misplaced their key CD. Other ones are years old and the laser transports need cleaning and alignment, just like ALL cd player regardless of manufacturer usually do.
