Let's say I only plan to listen to music. In "stereo". Would you recommend just 2 3-way component speaker systems to be fitted on either door plus 2 10" subs in the back of the car?

I would choose the speaker that sound the best to my ears. The number of ways in a speaker does not necessarily make it any better. Other than that sounds fine. Add an amp to the front speakers to clean it up and give it a better ability to keep up with the subs.

A good 3 way component set would sound better in my opinion if u decided to only use fronts and no rears

I at one point was running just a pair of mbquart dse216 2-way components of an eclipse amp and 2 infinity 10's of a alpine amp. After adding some speakers for the rear fill i find that the stereo sounds more complete now.

 

^^ oh man, now the rear fill debate will start up again! Since, it's started I'll put my .16 cents in...personally, I can't live without rear fill in my cars, I just find the music sounds dull and lifeless. This may be a problem with my set up as I'm sure there are wonderful sounding systems out there without rear fill, however, my systems all sound better to ME with rear fill than without it. The other thing I've come to realize after listening to some SQ competition cars is that I'm not as interested in accurate reproduction as I am in what i think sounds good. I guess that's why I was never interested in competing. As far as I'm concerned, if I like it then that's all that matters to me. That being said, my systems are pretty real sounding though to most audiophiles a little bass heavy and bright...which is just right...for ME.

Rear fill is a pain to deal with, but done right it actually works. In 5.1, 6.1, etc. surround sound, it is a must of course, but true stereo is just that - 2 channels.

I used to be a stereo fanatic, but have recently learned to like surround sound.

I guess it's like some people prefering to listen via headphones over listening to speakers in the open.

Good for you, veeman, for saying you like rear fill.

Don't you just hate it when audiophiles get up on their high horses and make others feel like they're inferior to them?

I like things to be on the bright side, but not too much bass. Mid bass punch is good, for sure.

 

Mugen brother, music is in the same category as food, you know what you like and what it should taste like. Music is no different, every venue imparts its own flavour to the tunes, a horn may sound very different in a bar than it does in a church, so who is to say what is accurate and what is not. I just happen to like my music with a dash of rear fill, a pinch of bass and a pat of treble. The only important factor in any system is it's effect on the listener. Does it excite your senses in a way that you feel is enjoyable? if it does then it has done it's job.

 

Amen....... I was hoping you would use the category of women to describe different tastes. Puts a good twist to the in a bar as opposed to in a church example above. Both excite my senses......... I'm just a horny old man. Sorry.
