The discussion has taken a bit of a weird turn... rear fill is almost always used more as a special effect than an attempt to gain accuracy (and that is cool, unless the goal is to be accurate). Rear fill IN SOME SYSTEMS is essential for a sense of spatial accuracy in others it is not. At a live event the time delay of the rear and side echoes will give a sense of hall size. For accurate reproduction in a car, rear fill can mimic that affect and the perception of depth can be enhanced (I suspect this is distortion in most cases but... do what makes you happy).
I only have a 3 way comp set up front but my sub is crossed over a little high at the moment and adds the rear fill spatial affect.
