poor sound quality

i have 2 memphis pr 12s 400w pushed by an audiobahn a8000t and a pioneer p5900 headunit the sound quality of my subs is sorry. i hooked them up in my friends car and they sounded great. i need to know how to set up my amp and headunit. this headunit has 10x the settings of my old one. and i know nothing about amps. the subs just sound muffled. the bass on the headunit is slamming even with the bass all the way down and the preset on vocal. if i want to drive through town i have to turn the subs off to keep from getting pulled over. with my old unit vocal had almost no bass.

Wow, there could be so many issues...

Are your subs wired for a load appropriate for the amp? It appears to run at 2 ohms, is this correct? 2 4 ohm subs would need to be wired in parallel to achieve 2 ohms.

Did you start out by turning your amp's gains all the way down? How about your HU, is your loudness switch on or off, start out by having it off and everything set to flat on your eq.

Are your subs installed in a box, were they in the same box when they sounded good in your friends car? Was it sealed and you've got a ported box now?

Sounds to me like your gain or bass boost is set too high. Try turning them down.

I personally never was a fan of audiobahn.

You mentioned the local sound shop did it, is this the level of bass that they set your system at? If so taking it back to them might not be a bad idea.
