okay i know this question has been asked a million times on here but what difference in the sound does a sealed box vs. a ported box make?....what are the benefits of each?

Hi Ben,

Here's a good reference site for you to get all the info you need on ported and sealed boxes:

The Subwoofer DIY Page

Best,

You should do a search cuz I gave a pretty comprehensive answer to this in the past.

Essentially: Vented boxes tend to be louder, play lower where you can hear it, handle more power and have less excursion in their pass band, and are bigger.

Sealed boxes tend to be smaller and harder to screw up.

ported boxes tend to be 3db louder at the tuning frequency, but ported boxes are harder to make and sound ike junk if not made just right!

Sealed offers higher power handling regardless of what some may think, are easier to make, and have a much smother frequency response IMO!

Hmm mostly depends on what kind of music you listen to. A sealed box would be great for rock/metal. For rap people usually want a ported inclosure to hit those low Hz.

Every things right with this post excpet I gotta disagree with you on that one, sealed boxes can handle alot more power then tuned as after the tuning point, the damping factor of the box goes to . Sealed will always have the damping (air suspension) to keep the cone from maxing out. Sealed can handle alot more power.
